The 2018 Red Raiders lost a lot of talent, but return some major playmakers from last season. The roster may not be as big as it has been in the past few seasons, but Coach Flint likes the guys he has.

“I really like the feeling of this team,” he said. “It’s a good unit. They’re playing for each other.”

Cavalier

6-foot-2 junior Morgan Cavalier seems to have the slight edge over 6-foot-6 senior Rand Bentley at the quarterback position. Both have seen limited time behind center, and each one has the ability to lead this team.

Junior Jack Fields could have a breakout season at running back, and is being pushed by senior Tim Edwards. Elijah Kongsaug is a big back (6-3 215 pounds) with some power, and junior Isaac Ninneman has great speed.

Lee

Senior Spencer Lee is the ultimate offensive weapon for the Red Raiders. He is already the school’s all-time career leader in receiving yards (1485) and receiving touchdowns (15). He’s also just 11 receptions away from breaking the Bellingham career receptions record, currently held by his former teammate, Ethan Fields. Needless to say, Coach Flint will find every way possible to get the ball into Lee’s hands.

Senior Ethan Johnson has emerged as a receiving threat on the outside, and he is joined by senior Jacob Hallock and junior Connor McKay.

Butenschoen

The offensive tackles will be a definite strength for Bellingham this season. Senior Christian Butenschoen and junior Butch Mullins each have tremendous strength, and should have an edge against most opponents head to head. The rest of the offensive line is still being pieced together, but look for juniors Julian Donohue, Gideon Bacheldor, Chris Oesterling, sophomore Gage Bell and freshman Finn O’Malley to see significant playing time.

Fields

Defensively, Butenschoen and Mullins will impose their will in the interior of the line, with Donohue and Oesterling at defensive end. Senior Sebastian Serrano could also get a look as a pass rushing specialist. Fields is a big hitter, and will get plenty of opportunities from his inside linebacker position. Kongshaug and senior Towner Goodman are also in the mix at linebacker. Edwards and McKay will be the outside linebackers with Hallock and Ninneman right behind.

The secondary has been a strength in the past for Bellingham, and it should remain that way. Lee intercepted four passes last season, returning one for a touchdown, and returns at one cornerback. Cavalier, Johnson and junior Trey Clayton will also be in the defensive backfield, and they will be joined by junior Andre Triplett once he recovers from his injury.

Kongshaug will assume the kicking duties, and Lee will be one of the most dangerous kick returners in Whatcom County.
