D. Roberts

The Mariners took a giant leap forward last season. It was a new schedule, a new coach, a new outlook. After losing their first six games, they ended on a four-game winning streak culminating in a 65-24 win against Blaine in a second half snow storm. The 65 points scored was the most in school history.

Michael Mindnich was a special quarterback last season, but he has moved to California. However, Sehome has three different athletes that could take over. Senior Christian Knudtson has taken a few snaps over the past few years, and knows the offense well. Senior Austin Roberts is an explosive, yet shifty, athlete that would bring a different dynamic to the position and sophomore southpaw Jacob Kaepernick is your traditional pocket passer.

Andrews

No matter which of the three line up five yards behind center, next to him will be senior running back Dylan Roberts. Roberts had a giant impact last year, scoring 14 touchdowns (12 rushing and two receiving), and he has a personal goal of scoring 25 this year. He’s also excited to be more involved in the passing game this year. He will be backed up by junior Dawson Smith and sophomore Colin Dorsch.

Nearly all of Sehome’s receivers return, which can only help out the new quarterback. Junior speedster Melloy Nelson scored 11 receiving touchdowns last season, which is tied for second place in Whatcom County history for receiving touchdowns by a sophomore. He’s nursing a quad injury now, but hopes to be on the field soon. Senior Brett Meggyesy is a valuable possession receiver with excellent hands, and when Austin Roberts isn’t behind center, he will be used in the passing game. Senior Michael McLin and sophomore Tim Malo should also contribute.

Travier

When the Mariners use an H-Back they will turn to Senior Junior Arreola and sophomore Jake Ortega.

Coach Beason will have his offensive line ready, no question about it. However, left tackle Bryce Andrews is still recovering a knee injury. Junior Rylie Bair will take his place, and lining up next to him at left guard will be senior Dawson “Big Daddy” Burroughs. Junior Quentin Icay takes over at center, and senior Koa Ostos returns at right guard. 245-pound senior Logan Henry will be the right tackle.

Meggyesy

A lot of the same players will take ownership of the defensive line, with Ostos on the nose. Burroughs and Andrews will flank him with Bair and senior Joseph Alvarez being rotated in.

Senior Andy Waters can fill a gap at linebacker better than perhaps anyone in the county, and he will team up with Smith on the inside. Dylan Roberts and sophomore Felipe Arreola will be the outside linebackers.

Waters

The secondary is a huge strength for Sehome, with almost everyone returning. Austin Roberts, McClin and Malo make for an awesome trio at cornerback, and Senior Jay Travier (who intercepted five passes in the final two games) returns at free safety, with Meggyesy returning at strong safety.

Nelson returns to handle all of the kicking duties after hitting 32 extra points and a field goal, while averaging 31.6 yards per punt in 2017. Austin Roberts returned two kickoffs for touchdowns last season, and should be another huge weapon on special teams.
