S. Lloyd

Not many teams in Whatcom County lost a better group of seniors, and to go along with that, sophomore phenom Ja’Lique Martin has transferred away. However, the Storm return a great group of players, including their starting quarterback Spencer Lloyd.

Powers

He was a great weapon last season, passing for 1251 yards and nine touchdowns, while rushing for 741 yards and 13 scores. He’s a gym rat that loves football, and he spent time in the offseason with the Russell Wilson Passing Academy to polish up his skills. In his 175 career passing attempts he has only thrown two interceptions, giving him the lowest interception percentage in the history of Whatcom County high school football.

Stepping in for the graduated Triston Smith at running back will be junior Branden Powers. Powers started at linebacker last season, but his speed and agility will allow him to step in right away at running back. Junior Devante Powell could also see a handful of carries from the slot position.

Powell

Powell and fellow junior Dedrick Mitchell return as wide receivers and are both tremendous athletes. Seniors Zach Tucker, Ashton Toctocan and Declan McGhee are also in the mix at wide receiver. Junior Collin McEachran and senior Drew Grimstead have each been working in at the H-Back position. It’s not a glamorous position, but they could get a few passes thrown their way in the Squalicum offense.

Mack

The offensive line is big, perhaps the biggest in the county. It all starts with 290-pound senior guard Dominick Mack. Coach Lucey calls him a “mountain of a man” but also refers to him as a coach on the field. 240-pound senior Jackson Campbell played a ton last year at left guard, and he will solidify that position. At 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds is junior Brandon Gimse, who has returned for an ACL injury to start at left tackle. 6-4 270-pound senior Karanjot Mann will play center, giving Coach Lucey his biggest center since stepping into the Strom program.

Mack will anchor the defensive line as the nose tackle of the Strom 3-4 defense. Gimse will also be a force in the interior of the line. Also in the trenches will be junior Jimmy Mena and Campbell. The defensive end/outside linebackers will be Lloyd, Grimstead and Tucker. After playing safety last season, Tucker had a tremendous offseason and has bulked his body up to play as a part of the front seven.

Mitchell

Powers and McEachran give Squalicum a great duo at inside linebacker. Both have tremendous speed and explosiveness, and the scary thing is that they are both just juniors. Mitchell and Toctocan will play cornerback, and they will be backed up by junior Mason Lloyd who scored on a 72-yard interception return last season. Powell returns at safety and he will be joined by McGhee. Sophomore Steven Owens has shown flashes during practice which will get him on the field at safety as well.

Mason Lloyd could be the guy to take over the kicking duties, and big brother Spencer averaged nearly 45 yards per punt last season in spot duty.
