BLAINE (4-4) AT MOUNTLAKE TERRACE (5-3)
Time: 5 PM Friday
Site: Edmonds District Stadium
When Blaine has the ball: The Borderites had their best passing game of the season last week, and hopefully some of that can spill over to tonight. Wide receiver Chase Abshere had a huge game last week, catching seven passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns, including the 100th catch of his career. Alex Mercado and Oscar Caridad are sharing time in the backfield. Both are on the smaller side, but they each have tremendous moves and agility. Wyatt Cole is a dominant offensive tackle, and tight end Hudson Reid is a great blocker and pass catcher.
When Mountlake Terrace has the ball: The Hawks put it on Blaine a few weeks ago, scoring 40 points. That is unusual for this Blaine defense that gives up the least amount of yards in Whatcom County. Look for senior Danyil Tkachov coming off the edge to put pressure on the quarterback. Reid is also great at timing snap counts, and getting through the interior of the line from his inside linebacker spot. Derek Machula and Seth Blomeen can cover a ton of ground from their safety spots, and linebackers Mason Vega and Zane Rector are great in pass coverage.
Player to watch: Kicker Bryce Kamrath has eight field goals on the season, the school record for a season is nine by Kyle Sentkowski. The Whatcom County record is 10, by Santiago Lopez from Lynden. A close game could come down to Kamrath’s boot, which bodes well for the orange and black.
