Geirean Hatchett – Senior – Guard/Defensive End
What can you say about Geirean Hatchett that hasn’t already been said? The future Washington Husky is coming into the season completely healthy, and his dominance will shine. He has a young team behind him, and they will be incredibly thankful for him.
Jacob Broselle – Senior – Running Back/Corner Back
He has a gear that not many other players have. He parked the Golden Eagles last season when he returned from injury to return kickoffs for touchdowns in consecutive games. It’s not just his straight line speed, he has great lateral moves that can cause defenders to miss. He’s also probably the most physical tackling corner back in the county.
Colby Tegt – Senior – Tight End/Defensive End
He didn’t have a to of playing time last season, but he made a difference when he was in there. He has a knack of rushing the passer, and making tackles for loss. He also caught a touchdown pass early in the game against Squalicum. He’s put on some extra pounds of muscle over the summer, and he should have a big season.
Malachi Ledbetter – Senior – Offensive Tackle/Defensive End
This physical transfer has wowed in practice, and I’m sure it will transfer to Friday nights. Quick feet and quick hands will allow him to stand out as a defensive end, and when he lines up at offensive tackle next to Hatchett, it could spell doom for the defense.
Biggest Strengths: Overall athletic ability up front and at linebacker. There will be a lot of new faces on the offensive line, but the one face that isn’t new and can’t be denied is that of Geirean Hatchett. Now at full strength, he and his fellow linemen are looking amazing. It’s a young linebacking corps, but they are very talented and can really fly to the ball.
Biggest Weakness: This will be perhaps the youngest overall team in Whatcom County. In the 22 starting positions when you combine offense and defense, the Golden Eagles will be starting a freshman in three of those spots. That is rarely done in high school football, and even rarer at Ferndale. To my knowledge, only Hatchett, Jake Locker and Casey Locker have done that as a Golden Eagle.
Who will be Ferndale’s break-out player?
Andrew Monks – Junior – Wide Receiver/Defensive Back
One of the best overall athletes on the team, and he could make a big difference on the outside in 2019. He will lineup at wide receiver, but he could also get some looks at wing back. Any way they can figure out to get him the ball will be a positive. He should also be a very good defensive back because of his skill set.
A losing season likely didn’t go over too well in Ferndale last season, a city that loves its football like no other. However, it’s a loyal city as well, and they know that 2019 will bring new hopes.
Junior quarterback Haiden Rasmussen was the backup last season, and he has taken the reigns of the Ferndale offense. Mark Schlichting has really good size for a sophomore (6-foot-1 190 pounds), and he will be the back up.
Senior Jacob Broselle has started the last two years at the wingback position, and his dynamic play making ability will allow him to shine there for a third season. Senior Michael Bernard took some carries last season at fullback, but he will moved to wingback as well. The youth movement in the backfield begins now with 200-pound sophomore Ryan Pelton at fullback and 190-pound freshman Isaiah Carlson at half back. They are young, but they have done what they have needed to do to win the starting jobs.
Junior Andrew Monks could also see some time in the backfield, but he will likely begin the season as the starting wide receiver. Senior Colby Tegt (6-2 205) brings good size to the tight end spot, and he brings the most experience to the position.
Seniors Geirean Hatchett (6-5 280) and Malachi Ledbetter (6-2 220) combine to possibly make the best overall duo lined up next to each other on the offensive line in Whatcom County, which is saying quite a bit. Geirean’s brother Landen Hatchett (6-0 245) is just a freshman, but the talent is there and he will start at center. Senior Trae Anderson (6-2 185) and junior Kobe Sandstrom (5-8 205) are battling it out for the other guard spot while Tyler Demorest (6-0 210) has settled into the other tackle position.
Geirean Hatchett will also be moved all over the defensive front, in order for other teams not to game plan running away from him. Demorest has had a great offseason, and will also fill in at defensive tackle. Ledbetter and Tegt will play defensive end.
As stated earlier, the linebackers are young, but they are very athletic. In Ferndale’s 4-3 defense, the middle linebacker is very important, and it will be up to Carlson to fill that spot. Sandstrom and sophomore Jazen Guillory will flank him on the outside.
Broselle returns at corner back, and he will by far be bringing the most experience to the secondary. Monks played a little bit of corner as a sophomore last season, and he will be relied upon to play a lot more this year. Jacob’s brother Thomas Broselle is a sophomore that could also see some big playing time at corner back. Bernard, Pelton and senior Cooper Taxdahl are all working hard to get on the field at safety.
The Golden Eagles will have yet another left-footed kicker this season, and it will be junior James Werth. He can also kickoff, as well as punt, and Coach Plenkovich said that he could be a real weapon for them this year. Jacob Broselle has been electric in the return game the past two seasons, and he’s a player that other teams might want to avoid kicking the ball to.
