Zach Sipma – Senior – Wide Receiver/Defensive Tackle
Yep, you read that correctly. A wide receiver on offense and a defensive tackle on defense. An he dominates at both. A freak athlete, and the ultimate matchup problem for defenders. A great target in the red-zone, and he could lineup all over the field on offense. Defensively, he has an explosive first step that allows him to get the advantage in the A-gap.
Levi Korthuis – Senior – Running Back/Defensive End
Last season he broke the school record for most carries in a season, and the workhorse is back for more. His combination of toughness, balance, vision and agility is a unique blend that many high school running backs don’t possess. He could also get a few more reps on defense this season, as a defensive end.
Trajan Schouten – Senior – Quarterback
A major talent with a major arm. He can make all the throws, and his accuracy was evident from week one last season. He will put the team on his back and he has the ability to lead them all the way in 2019.
Davis Gatterman – Senior – Guard/Linebacker
He was such a valuable part of the defense in 2018, and he set the tone on his first tackle of the season with a bone-rattling it on the sideline. He reads offenses extremely well, and reacts immediately. He also brings the most experience back from last season’s offensive linemen.
Biggest Strength: Overall talent and experience. So many players return from last year’s team that reached the state semifinals. There has never been a team in Whatcom County history that has returned an 1800-yards passer, a 900-yard rusher and TWO players that caught at least 40 passes the season before. They have the players, and the coaching staff, to make history in 2019.
Biggest Weakness: Inexperience on the both lines and the kicking game. The Lyncs will look upon a few first-year varsity players when replacing All-State OL/DL Dylan Kaemingk and All-State K/P Blake ReRuyter. LC has the athletes to do so, but we will have to wait and see how quickly they grasp the tempo of varsity level football.
Who will be Lynden Christian’s break-out player?
Luke Timmer – Senior – Defensive End
After growing a few inches over the summer, Timmer (at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds) has all the physical tools to dominate on the edge. The Lyncs have had tremendous defensive ends over the years, and Timmer hopes to keep the tradition alive.
When Coach Dan Kaemingk returned to coaching in 2016, he took over a team that had struggled the past few years. As he worked hard on coaching his players up, he probably couldn’t help but notice what was happening on the far side of the practice field with his C-Team. A large group of freshmen, in both number of bodies and overall size, and many of them got their first taste of varsity action last season as juniors.
One of those many juniors that is now a senior is quarterback Trajan Schouten. His 1886 passing yards last season broke the school record, and that happened while missing two and a half games in the middle of the season. He has complete control of the offense, and he’s also the only returning quarterback between the Northwest Conference 1A teams.
Senior Levi Korthuis carried the ball more than any other player last season in Whatcom County, as well as any other player in a season in school history. He played hurt at times, and always brought it. He led the team in rushing and scoring, and opposing teams have to key on him, which can only open up options for Schouten. Senior Easton Stremler was a valuable backup last season, and his playing time could be upped in 2019. His size and toughness should allow him to step in the fullback/tight end hybrid spot that Sam Faber shined in last season.
LC also returns a pair of players that caught over 40 passes last season in seniors Jackson Corkill and Tanner Feenstra. Corkill is the speedster that can be used on the deep ball, as well as fly sweeps. He always has the ability to break the game wide open every time he touches the ball. Feenstra has unbelievable hands, and will catch everything thrown his way. And despite being 5-foot-11, his vertical leaping ability has allowed him to master the jump ball, especially in the red zone. 6-foot-3 230-pound senior Zach Sipma provides a great catching radius for Schouten over the middle, and even when opposing defenses have good position on him, he can out-play them for the ball. Senior Bryce Bouwman, who is wide considered the best backup quarterback in the county, could see a lot of playing time as a wide receiver as well. They are being pushed by seniors Jude Veltkamp and Preston Vander Veen.
The offensive line will be the group that will need to come together the quickest for the Lyncs to have a special season. Dylan Kaemingk, Simon Anker and Jake Libolt were all very special players up front last season, and replacing them will be the key. Seniors Davis Gatterman (5-10 200) and Kase Lautenbach (6-1 235) both return, and many players are competing to join them up front. Seniors Erik Veening (6-3 245) and Luke Timmer (6-6 230) have been waiting there turn over the years, and have put in the time over the offseason for this moment. Also putting forth a tremendous effort are seniors Chase Van Dalen (6-0 200) and Levi Van Weerdhuizen (6-0 185). Both played as freshmen, but haven’t played since.
Sipma is the lone returning starter on the defensive line, and he will command a lot of attention wherever he lines up. Lautenbach has looked great in camp next to him at defensive tackle. Four players are vying for the starting defensive end positions, including Korthuis and Timmer.
In Coach Kaemingk’s 4-2-5 defense the two linebackers need to be sure tacklers, and they return the awesome combo of Gatterman and senior Will Faber. They both have good size, speed, and they rarely give up yardage when making first contact. The third linebacker/strong safety hybrid position is a favorite to play on the LC defense, and Sam Faber played it perfectly last season. You might have to cover a slot receiver one-on one, or you might have to blitz the quarterback. Stremler and junior Logan Dykstra can each fit the bill for that spot.
Veltkamp returns as the main corner back after starting all of last season. He led the team with 15 passes defended and four interceptions. Junior Shale Whittern started at the other corner position, but he won’t be able to play until October because of a broken wrist. Vander Veen and junior Cole Moorlag could fill the spot in his absence. Bouwman returns at one of the safety spots, and he has great reactionary skills that allow him to break on the ball quicker than most. Junior Jackson Apol will play free safety, where is brother Jalen shined so well in 2018.
Apol, and juniors Eli Den Bleyker and Devonta Bootsma are battling for the kicking and punting duties.
