Jacob Kaepernick – Junior – Quarterback
He broke almost every school passing record as a sophomore in 2018, so you’d have to imagine big things as he returns at quarterback. A great leader that all his teammates get behind. This will be the first time that Coach Beason has a returning quarterback, and what a great one to have.
Melloy Nelson – Senior – Wide Receiver/Kicker
He got bit by the injury bug last season, but if he returns to his 2017 form, look out! A tremendous athlete in space, all you have to do is find ways to get him the ball. A big season in 2019 could result in him breaking numerous school career receiving, and kicking, records.
Dawson Smith – Senior – Running Back/Linebacker
As a running back, he might be the hardest back to tackle in 2019. He runs with an attitude. He can make a move if he decides to, but he’d rather run through you. A big-time playmaker at inside linebacker. A sure-handed tackler that does a great job of run blitzing (11.5 tackles for loss last season).
Rylie Bair – Senior – Guard/Defensive End
Usually when players have a ton of potential, it’s just that… potential. Well, Bair has a ton of potential, and he’s already started to reach it. He has a tremendous frame that he continues to muscle onto each season. He will constantly be the opponents backfield disrupting plays. He has great vision from his 3-4 defensive end spot, and knows how to pursue the ball carrier.
Biggest Strengths: Returning QB and belief in themselves. Kaepernick returns, and his grasp of the offense has continually grown. He has also put on 20 pounds since last season, and should be able to handle the wear and tear. The consistent growth as a football program has become evident as they reached the state playoffs last season. The Mariners are now one of the top teams in Whatcom County.
Biggest Weaknesses: New corners and receivers. Tim Malo was great at corner back last year, but he will be moved to free safety in 2019. Sehome will now look for young players to step up and start at corner back, much like Malo did last season. The Mariners also graduated a bunch of great pass catchers from last season. A few new players will need to fill the void, and learn from Nelson and Malo.
Who will be Sehome’s break-out player?
Tim Malo – Junior – Wide Receiver/Safety
You can’t teach speed. Well, you can…. You can teach better technique in running, but what Malo has is different. As one of the fastest players in the county, now playing free safety, he will break on opposing passes and could end up with a huge season. Offensively, he could end up being the main target for Kaepernick.
We all know about the current up-swing that Sehome has been on over the past few years. In 2016, the Mariners went winless. In Coach Kevin Beason’s first season in 2017 they won four games (their last four of the season). Last season they won the NWC 2A Lake Division, triumphed over Archbishop Murphy and earned a spot in the state playoffs.
Junior Jacob Kaepernick returns, and after passing for 2500+ yards and 25 touchdowns, it looks like he could have another big season. He lost some big weapons from 2018, but his overall improvement should overcome that as he helps the newcomers along.
210-pound senior running back Dawson Smith will get the majority of the carries this season, and his running style is brutal. His ability to wear down defenses will really be able to help the Mariners in the second half of their games. Junior Colin Dorsch will also get good playing time at running back, and he is more of a slasher that will hit the hole and go.
Senior Melloy Nelson and junior Tim Malo should be one of the best wide receiver tandems in Whatcom County. Both have electrifying speed, and have put up big numbers in the past. 6-foot-5 senior Grant Collins is also in the mix on the outside, and his size could present a mismatch problems for opposing defenses. Junior Ezekial Clark and sophomores Zach Chisolm and Derrick Heyward provide good depth for the Sehome receiving corps. Sophomore Caleb Ryan and junior Felipe Arreola will split time at H-Back.
This will be the third year at starting center for Quentin Icay (6-0 190), and Coach Beason has to love the consistency that Icay brings game in and game out. And, Coach Beason would know, as he was named to Don Hansen’s NAIA All-American third team in 1989 at center for Western Washington University. Fellow seniors Rylie Bair (6-4 225) and Thomas Cassella (5-11 200) will start at guard, and they should be able to help along the sophomore offensive tackles. Gavin Ortega (6-4 220) and John Dawson (6-1 240) have great size and tremendous upside.
Sehome’s three-man line should be led by Bair. His 43.5 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks are all near the top of the stat leaderboard for returning defensive line players across the county. Ortega could also get some time on the d-line along with senior Maximus Pavlosky, junior Lucas Lehn and sophomore Grant Wei.
Smith played a huge role in the Sehome defense last season, and he returns to his inside linebacker spot. Icay and sophomore Hayden Huntley should both get good playing time next to Smith. Arreola and Ryan are both very strong outside linebackers that can rush the quarterback or drop back in pass coverage.
The secondary was a major strength last season, and Malo will be the key catalyst to make everything run smoothly again in 2019. Last season he led the county by breaking 15 passes from his corner back spot, not at free safety, his interception numbers could climb. Dorsch will join Malo in the defensive backfield at strong safety. An eager group of youngsters are competing at corner back, and it looks like Chisolm and Clark will get the first crack at it.
The kicking game should remain strong with Nelson, Arreola and Kaepernick all returning. Nelson might handle all of the duties, but Arreola can kick extra points if needed and Kaepernick averaged over 37 yards per punt last season when Nelson was injured.
