Dedrick Mitchell – Senior – Wide Receiver/Corner Back
He can be used in so many ways. Deep routes, slants, fly sweeps… he’s even thrown a few touchdown passes. A great one-on-one cover corner, and special in the return game as well. He will give the Storm a big boost when he returns after week four.
Jimmy Mena – Senior – Offensive Line/Defensive Line
A great overall player that really gets after it on the line. Not as big as Jackson Campbell from last season, but should be equally as affective. A master at shedding blocks and getting into the opposing backfield.
Brandon Gimse – Senior – Offensive Tackle
Plays with a great base, and is a terrific offensive tackle. He should be getting looks to play at the next level. He already has the size, and his footwork is always coming along. His pass blocking abilities could be put to great use as the Storm could open up the passing game a little more this season.
Ben Paz – Senior – Offensive Line
As steady as it gets up front on the line. Great quickness for an offensive lineman, and could get more playing time on the defensive line this season. Definitely the kind of player that you want on your team.
Biggest Strengths: Offensive Line and front seven on defense. There will be a lot of new players touching the ball, but it will be the same studs up front blocking for them. Any coach will tell you that it all begins up front, and Squalicum has what it takes to win the battle in the trenches.
Biggest Weakness: Replacing injured players. Collin McEachran and Mason Lloyd were juniors last season that were going to be major components to the 2019 version of the Squalicum Storm. McEachran hurt his shoulder playing lacrosse and Lloyd tore his ACL playing soccer. Both will be miss the entire season.
Who will be Squalicum’s break-out player?
Ben Schlenbaker – Sophomore – Running Back/Outside Linebacker
It’s hard to believe he’s just a sophomore. He got a lot of playing time last season at outside linebacker, and he could get the bulk of the carries this season. A great combination of strength, size and speed. He could blossom into one of the best players in the school’s 21-year history.
Already Squalicum’s all-time leader in coaching victories, sixth-year coach Nick Lucey could have the toughest coaching task ahead of him in 2019. After winning the Wesco 3A North Division last season, every team will be gunning for the Storm this season.
Leading the Storm will be junior quarterback, Mason Binning. He reads the defensive quickly, and throws a very catchable ball. He won’t be the runner that Spencer Lloyd was last season, but who will be? Binning could really air it out this season.
Senior Branden Powers split time at running back last season when he was healthy, and he brings a straight-ahead style of running. He also has the speed to break it outside when needed. Sophomore Ben Schlenbaker (6-1 210) will be another powerful running back that the Storm can count on late in games. Senior Elliott Aslan will also get carries.
Senior Dedrick Mitchell is the eighth leading receiver in school history, but in his brief absence to begin the season, the Storm will look to other new athletes on the outside. Junior Steven Owens, who caught a touchdown pass from Mitchell last season, played running back last season and he will line up at wide receiver this year. Juniors Bryce Pennock and Aidan Weston are also competing for spots on the outside, along with sophomores Reed Richardson and Kai Posey.
Senior Cesar Vasquez came out of nowhere last season to make a name for himself on the defensive line. This season, he will play H-back on offense. Senior Garrett Jabbora and junior Billy Scammell are also in competition for the tight end/fullback hybrid spot. Coach Lucey always seems to find unique ways to get the ball to whomever is playing that position.
The offensive line is incredibly strong, and will be relied upon heavily to begin the season. Senior Brandon Gimse (6-5 300) returns for his third season at offensive tackle. Seniors Jimmy Mena (5-11 210), Ben Paz (6-3 245) and Adam McCluskey (6-3 200) all return, and should form one of the best overall units in the county. Senior Adam Morris (5-8 200), junior Jayden Raymond (6-1 210) and sophomore Bryson Lamb (6-1 210) are all varisty-level athletes that could get a lot of time up front.
Mena and Vasquez return to the defensive line, and are both extremely quick. Paz, McCluskey and Gimse all bring great size to the front three. Scammell and Jabbora each played a lot at inside linebacker last season, and are both sure tacklers. Schlenbaker returns at outside linebacker, and Powers moves from inside to outside linebacker. Depth will not be an issue here with Morris, Lamb and sophomore Hayden Flaherty waiting in the wings.
Owens will start at free safety, and Aslan could be a major factor at strong safety. Pennock, Weston, Richardson and Posey are all in the mix to start at corner back, and the secondary will only get a boost when Mitchell returns in October.
Sophomore Trevor Keeley is slated to kick extra points, with either Vasquez and Schlenbaker kicking off. Squalicum also has senior soccer player Addison Schrock that could figure into the mix.
