Coach: Sydney Taggart
Home Field: Frank Geri Fields
Last Season: 2-15 (1-11 Conference)
Key Losses: Olivia Whitney (.407 AVG, 11 R, 3 2B, 4 3B, 13 RBI).
Top Returnees: P Gracie Nguyen, P/OF Gabby Recio, SS Nichole Adams, C/1B Mya Hamner, 2B Zoey Marshall.
Pitchers and Catchers: Over the past two season, junior Gracie Nguyen has totaled some big numbers. She has won 12 games, pitched 121 innings, walked only 38 batters and has struck out 233. Left-handed sophomore Gabby Recio pitched the bulk of the season in 2019, and struck out 67 batters in just over 69 innings. Freshman lefty Regan Andersen is another promising pitcher that should have an extremely bright future. Coach Sydney Taggart is still deciding on which catcher to start the season with, and she reiterated to me that the pitching won’t be a problem, and having a good catcher will go a long way.
Infield: A lot of experience returns around the infield for the Storm, with the lone senior, Nichole Adams (.313 AVG, .353 OBP, 10 R, 1 HR, 9 RBI), returning at short stop. Junior Zoey Marshall (.311 OBP, 2 2B) also returns at second base, and junior Mya Hamner (.396 OBP, 10 BB, 4 RBI) is back at first base.
Outfield: Recio (.283 AVG, .400 OBP, 12 R, 6 2B, 6 RBI) will play in the outfield when she’s not pitching, and she has one of the strongest arms in the county. Coach Taggart also likes the promise shown by freshman Logan Marshall, who should see time in the outfield immediately.
Final Analysis: Although it’s a young team, there has been a lot of good leadership. Coach Taggart is excited about starting a legacy at Squalicum, and this would be a great year to do it. There are some great pieces this year, and with one senior and just three juniors, the future will continue to get brighter.
