The Trojans return more varsity experience than any other team in Whatcom County, and it showed in their season opener against the Cougars, winning 25-13, 25-11 and 25-12. Senior Jolena Hoefer had 11 kills (.391 hitting) one ace and eight digs, while senior Finnley Claeys finished with seven kills (.333), six aces and 18 digs. Sophomore Emry Claeys chipped in with eight kills, junior Avery Neal had four aces and 17 digs, and senior Malaysia Smith ran the offense to perfection, totaling 25 assists.
LYNDEN 3, MOUNT VERNON 0
The Lions got back into the win column, defeating the Bulldogs 25-11, 25-7 and 25-10. Junior Lucy White had a huge night from the service line, serving 17 points in a row, ending the match with six aces. Sophomores Haylee Koetje and Ashley Shumate were dominant, with 10 kills and nine kills, respectively. Koetje also had seven digs, to go with five digs from Mia Apps. Joslyn Sipma was strong in the middle with three blocks, while also registering five kills. Sophomore Grace Rice gave out 19 assists.
NOOKSACK VALLEY 3, OAK HARBOR 2
After losing the first two sets (17-25 and 25-27), the Pioneers went on a “Valley Ralley” to come back to win the following three sets (25-22, 25-19 and 15-12) to nab a road win against the Wildcats. Stats were not kept, but Lainey Kimball and Taylor Lentz led the way at the net, while Ellie Van Berkum set the tone on defense.
