It’s that weird week 10! That week where some teams are playing, some teams aren’t, some teams already did, all that stuff. We’d like to thank Ben Elenbaas for being our guest picker this week, and you can learn more about him in our podcast below! Also, below are the previews for all the games this weekend.

CASCADE (EVERETT) (8-1) AT SEHOME (6-3)

Time: 5 PM Friday

Site: Civic Stadium

What to expect: A couple of awesome teams that really know how to move the ball, especially on the ground. This game will definitely be won in the trenches, and the key for the Mariners will be shutting down the Cascade running game. Sehome has a had long season, and you can bet the program will put everything into this last game of the season.

Funk

Player to watch: Senior running back/outside linebacker Tommy Funk. Can you believe I’ve gone all year without mentioning him once as the player to watch? Not only is he one of the best players on his team, but one of the top players in the entire county. It’s been a joy to watch him over the last three years.

Historical significance: These two teams have played each other just three times over the years, all in the 1990’s when they were conference foes. The Bruins won all three matchups, including in 1998 when Matt Carver returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown for the Mariners.

Moving up the record book: The school record for most receiving yards in a season is 735 by Brett Meggyesy in 2018. Sophomore Andre Watson currently has 623 yards, just 112 yards shy of school record.

BELLINGHAM (3-6) AT SULTAN (5-4)

Time: 7:00 PM Friday

Site: Sultan High School

What to expect: The Bayhawks are back to playing pretty good football at this point in the season. Roles are being filled extremely well, and they are playing with confidence. The Turks have a winning record, but haven’t played the toughest schedule. This could be a great matchup, and I could see Bellingham controlling the clock and making huge plays on defense.

Lynch

Player to watch: Senior defensive lineman Austin Lynch. He has really come on strong here at the end of the season, and had a fantastic game against Friday Harbor. He’s going to do everything he can to end his career with a bang.

Historical significance: These two teams have never played each other.

Moving up the record book: Senior running back Logan Steeves has ran for 725 yards this season, good for 15th all-time. If he gains at least 80 yards tonight, he would pass Larry Ripley, Connor Wallace and Kalien Hayes for most rushing yards in a season.

CEDAR PARK CHRISTIAN (1-6) AT BLAINE (1-8)

Time: 7 PM Friday

Site: Blaine High School

What to expect: The Borderites and the Eagles each just have one win on the season, but I would imagine that Blaine would have a boatload more wins if it played Cedar Park Christian’s schedule. The Borderites’ passing game has been going pretty well at this point of the season, with junior wide receiver Hunter Vezzetti having a huge season on both sides of the ball.

Albright

Player to watch: Senior center Jack Albright. Ultra smart, and ultra competitive. Always a perfect snap, and great strength against bigger opponents. He always gets the job done.

Historical significance: The two teams have played each other just twice before, with the Borderites winning both times. Many will remember the 2012 matchup, when senior Mario Gobbato carried the ball 57 times for 480 yards and seven touchdowns in the 50-20 win. Not a typo.

Moving up the record book: Junior wide receiver Hunter Vezzetti has caught 38 passes so far this season, there have only been 10 seasons in school history when a Borderite has totaled 40 or more receptions in a season.

SEATTLE PREP (5-4) AT FERNDALE (7-2)

Time: 8 PM Friday

Site: Civic Stadium

What to expect: A spot in the Class 3A State Playoffs is on the line here, and the Golden Eagles were in this situation last year. You can bet that they are going to do everything to make it a different outcome than last season. The running game has been on fire all season, and Ferndale’s passing game had it’s best outing last week. The defense also picked off four passes, and it looks like the Golden Eagles are peaking at just the right time.

Fetty

Player to watch: Senior guard/defensive tackle Trevor Fetty. A mountain of a man that plays football the way you want it to be played. Over-powering, but under control. One of the top interior offensive linemen in the area.

Historical significance: These two squads have only faced off against each other twice ever, in 1995 and 1996. The Golden Eagles got shut out wins in both instances, and in the 1995 game senior running back Ash Perrin ran for 241 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries.

Moving up the record book: Last week, senior running back Isaiah Carlson became the fifth player in school history to rush for over 3,000 yards in a career. He’s currently 222 yards behind John Locker for fourth place in school history.
