Sehome 5, Lakewood 3

Mariner ace Jacob Gillig went the distance, striking out 12 and allowing just one walk to pick up his second victory of the season. It was also the senior’s double that broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Hudson Neff and Campbell Robbins to take the lead. His dominant pitching throughout never allowed the Cougars back into the game. Neff, a freshman, scored twice for Sehome, and he also stole three bases.

The Borderites were down 1-0 for the majority of the game, including in the bottom of the seventh when Axel Puls led off the inning. The senior short stop got hit by a pitch, and promptly stole second base. Junior center fielder Hunter Vezzetti followed that up with a triple to center field which scored Puls to make it a tie game with still nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. The big bat of Alejandro Moser-Hernandez was taken away as the 6-foot-3 junior first baseman was intentionally walked. He then stole second base, and Deon Bowman was also hit by a pitch. The bases were loaded, and the Borderites just needed one more run. Two batters later, Owen Wenger singled up the middle to win the game for Blaine. Diego Guttierez pitched his second complete game victory in as many varsity appearances.
