Ferndale 7, Mount Vernon 6

Despite a six-run bottom of the third inning for the Bulldogs, the Golden Eagles scored three in the top of the fifth to take a one-run lead, and held on for the rest of the contest. Andrew James scored on a ground out to tie the game at six, and two batters later Talan Bungard scored on an error when a pickoff attempt at second base went array. Jake Mason picked up his 17th career varsity victory on the mound, and Dylan Strom came on with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Strom walked two batters, but also struck out two to close the game out. Ferndale will next face Edmonds-Woodway at Everett Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:00.

Lynden 10, Bellingham 0

The Lions took care of business in the first round, and they did it in all phases, with great hitting, pitching and defense. Senior designated hitter Kaedan Hermanutz blasted his second homerun of the season and drove in a pair of runs, while Kael Stapleton hit a double and a triple. Senior catcher Kobe Baar reached base four times, and scored three times. Junior pitcher Lane Simonsen picked up his Whatcom County-leading seventh win of the season while hurling a one-hit shutout. The Bayhawks lone hit came from junior centerfielder Joe Toof. Lynden will take on Burlington-Edison at 3:00 on Tuesday at Daniels Field in Anacortes, while Bellingham will play in a loser-out contest at 3:00 on Tuesday at Volunteer Park in Anacortes against Sedro-Woolley.

Archbishop Murphy 5, Squalicum 0

A leadoff double in the top of the third by junior third baseman Colby Lewis was all the offense the Storm could come up with against the Wildcats on Saturday morning. Ben Hebert pitched well in his four innings of work, allowing just three hits and striking out four, but he yielded two unearned runs. The Storm continue in the tournament on Tuesday night at 6:00 at Volunteer Park in Anacortes against Sehome in a loser-out contest.

L: Hebert (2-6)

SQU: Lewis 1-2, 2B.

Anacortes 11, Sehome 1

The Mariners took one on the chin against a strong Seahawks squad that put up runs in every inning. Sehome’s lone run came in the fourth inning when Ryder McGrath scored on a passed ball. Campbell Robbins led the Sehome offense with a pair of base hits. The Mariners will face Squalicum in a loser-out contest on Tuesday night at 6:00 at Volunteer Park in Anacortes.

L: McGrath (0-5)

SEH: Robbins 2-3; C. Neff 1-3, SB; Gillig 1-2.

King’s 6, Blaine 4

Defensive mishaps turned into a major bugaboo for the Borderites. Five errors led to all six of the Knights’ runs, and Blaine wasn’t able to come back. Sophomores Evan Yates and Deon Bowman each had a pair of hits for the Borderites, while Kieran Markusen scattered five hits over six innings before ultimately taking the hard-luck loss in the first round of the double-elimination tournament.

L: Markusen (4-2)

BLA: Yates 2-4; Bowman 2-3, RBI, R; Puls 1-3, 2B, 2 RBI, HBP; Swinburnson 1-3, RBI; Wenger 1-2, BB; Deming 1-3, R.

Overlake/Bear Creek 3, Lynden Christian 2

The Growls scored all three of their runs in the third innings, and the Lyncs clawed back with a run in both the fifth and the sixth, but just couldn’t break through after that. Freshman catcher Treyson Johnson led the way with three hits, including a run batted in and run scored, while junior left fielder also had two clutch hits, including a run-scoring line drive.

L: Dykstra (2-4)

LC: Johnson 3-3, RBI, R; Brink 2-3, RBI; Bouwman 1-2, R, BB, SB; Paxton 1-3.

Meridian 5, South Whidbey 0

The Trojans weren’t able to get a single soul on base until the sixth inning, but when Silas Berschauer led off the inning with a walk, and Tristan Wang sacrificed Berschauer to second base, it started a what would be a big inning for Meridian. Tyson Timmer’s ground out moved Berschauer to third base, and now with two outs Hunter Jones singled in Berschauer, Ian Forbes singled to advance Jones to third, Jaeger Fyfe singled in Jones and Jonah Aase drew a walk to load the bases. Tyrel Brooks followed all that up with a line shot over the right fielder’s head to clear the bases on a triple. Fyfe pitched masterfully the entire game, allowing just one hit in the complete game shut out, while striking out nine batters and not allowing a walk.

W: Fyfe (6-0)

MER: Jones 1-3, RBI, R; Forbes 1-3, R; Fyfe 1-3, RBI, R; Brooks 1-3, 3B, 3 RBI.

Lynden Christian 5, Blaine 3

In a win-or-go home contest, both teams decided to go with their senior leaders on the mound. In that matchup, it was LC’s Isaac Paxton that was able to outlast Axel Puls, with Paxton going all the way, and picking up his 14th career victory. The Borderites held a 3-1 lead after four innings, but a huge top of the fifth by the Lyncs, which was highlighted by a bases loaded triple by Brody Bouwman, allowed Lynden Christian to take the lead for good. Blaine junior Diego Guttierez got the final seven outs, without allowing a hit, but the Borderite offense couldn’t push through in the final few innings. The Lyncs survived, and will play again on Saturday at Joe Martin Stadium at 1:00 against Meridian in another loser-out contest. Blaine’s season ended with a 13-8 record.

W: Paxton (4-3)

L: Puls (1-2)

LC: Dykstra 3-4, R, 2 SB; Bouwman 2-4, 3B, 3 RBI, R; Maberry 1-4, R, SB; Zylstra 1-2, BB.

Cedar Park Christian 3, Meridian 0

In a winner-to-state contest, the Trojan offense was all but shut down, as sophomore Jonah Aase was the only Meridian player to pick up a hit. Aase also pitched the complete game, allowing just three hits while striking out nine. The Trojans will try to keep their season alive on Saturday at Joe Martin Stadium at 1:00 against Lynden Christian.

L: Aase (5-3)

MER: Aase 1-2, 2B, HBP.
