Maybe because both teams have shared a football stadium the past two years meant they wanted to put up a football score? I don’t know, but it was a crazy scene out at Ferndale High School on Tuesday. In a game that had 25 walks and nine errors, the Borderites held a 15-4 advantage after the top of the fourth inning, the Golden Eagles then went on to score 19 unanswered runs. Jake Mason and Dylan Strom each hit home runs for Ferndale, and Mason finished with seven runs batted in and nine total bases. Strom and Andrew James each had four RBI’s. Down by one run in the top of the seventh, Mariner senior Jacob Gillig led off the inning with a walk. He promptly stole second base, and was then able to score when Ben Sefrit tripled on a line drive to center field. Two batters later left-handed hitting Salvador Backman lined a triple to right fielder to score Sefrit to take the late lead. Gillig then closed the door on the Pioneer offense in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Backman finished with two RBI’s and Jackson Evans had a pair of base hits.
