Blaine 6, Meridian 2

When the two top local 1A teams met each other, they each put their best feet forward with both teams throwing their respective aces. As predicted, both Jonah Aase and Kieran Markusen pitched brilliantly, but when both of their pitch counts topped out it became a bullpen game and went into extra innings. The Borderites erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth, using base hits, sacrifices and a hit-by pitch. 24 hours after picking up the save, Aase went 6 1/3 innings, allowed four hits and struck out 15 batters, which now gives him a remarkable 88 strike outs on the season. Markusen threw six innings and struck out nine batters. Austin Alaniz led the Borderite offense with three hits and two runs batted in, and Mason Akre had three runs batted in. Hunter Jones led the Trojans with three hits, and Aase walked three times and had a double. Axel Puls pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory.

Both pitchers pitched well enough to win, and neither one of them had an earned run score against them. Unfortunately, there is such a thing as unearned runs, and the Pioneers took advantage of the timely Storm mistakes. Nooksack Valley senior Bennett DeLange went five strong innings, allowing just four hits and Henry Lind pitched the final two innings to pick up his first save of the season. Squalicum ace Elijah Knowlton struck out 11 batters, and went the distance to take the tough-luck loss.
