  • Mount Baker 51, Orcas Island 34

The Mountaineers had a huge second half, outscoring the Vikings 33-12, and came away with their third victory of the season.

Sophomore guard Natalie VanLiew had a double-double with 18 points and an incredible 12 steals to lead her team, while senior forward Jenna Wineinger also posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Violet Fox shot 7-of-16 from the floor, scored 15 points and also had eight rebounds, eight steals, two assists and two blocks. Although sophomore Samiya Powell didn’t get into the scoring column she found other ways to help her team win, as she contributed five steals, four rebounds and a team-high four assists.

It’s the first in four years that Mount Baker has started a season 3-0.

  • Nooksack Valley 63, Archbishop Murphy 56

The Pioneers took the Wildcats’ best shot on the road, and came away with the close win.

Senior guard Devin Coppinger scored 22 points in the first half alone, and they were much needed as Nooksack Valley went into halftime with a 35-34 lead. She finished with a team-high 36 points, to go along with her six rebounds and three steals.

Senior forward Lainey Kimball scored 14 points, and finished with four steals and three assists, while senior forward Tana Hoekema scored six points and had seven rebounds.

  • Jackson 62, Ferndale 54

The Timberwolves jumped out to a 31-8 to begin the game, as the Golden Eagles began shooting 1-for-19 from the field.

Ferndale did outscore Jackson 18-5 in the final quarter to cut the deficit to a single digit before losing at home.

Senior Mallory Butenschoen missed nearly the entire first quarter due to foul trouble, but came back to lead her team with 15 points, as she made 4-of-8 from downtown. She also grabbed six rebounds and had a team-high three steals.

Senior Naomi Stanley had 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Jillea Fox had eight points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kayla Washington had nine points to go along with her team-high five assists, and sophomore Abbey White pulled down nine rebounds, dished out three assists, blocked two shots and scored six points.
