The Lions played a tightly contested first set with the Mariners before winning in three straight.

Lynden senior Ashley Shumate had a well-rounded match with 10 kills, eight digs and six aces. Grace Rice ran the offense smoothly with 25 assists and Mya VanderYacht dug out 16.

Sehome was led by sophomore Hayden Niewiadomski’s eight kills and six digs. Maddie Behrends had six kills and three blocks, while Emmy Lee totaled 17 assists and Molly Burfeind had 12 digs.

NOOKSACK VALLEY 3, MOUNT VERNON 0

Kimball

The Pioneers got off to a great start of the 2023 season with a sweep at Mount Vernon, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-7.

Senior Lainey Kimball led with 10 kills, nine digs and two aces, and Tana Hoekema was right behind her with eight kills, six digs and two aces.

“I was impressed with how well we ran our defensive systems this early in the season,” Nooskack Valley coach Katie Emmons said. “We have some new faces, as well as some girls in new positions, and I was proud to see them step up into these roles”

Juliana Gimmaka finished with 15 digs and six aces, while Payton Bartl dished out 20 assists to go with her four kills.

LYNDEN CHRISTIAN 3, LA CONNER 2

VanderKooi

After losing the first and third set, the Lyncs came back to defeat the Braves in the fifth set.

“By the last match the girls communicated well, served the ball tough and had an attack mentality for each point,” LC coach Kristy Van Egdom said. “I’m proud of the way they played, and never gave up on a point.”

Statistics were not available following the match, but the Lyncs received a great performance by freshman Taya VanderKooi in her varsity debut.

 

BELLINGHAM 3, MOUNT BAKER 0

Flick-Williams

The Bayhawks looked strong in their first match, and swept the Mountaineers 25-9, 25-11 and 25-5.

Bellingham was led by senior Chayse Flick-Williams who was all over the court with 15 kills, nine digs, six aces and three assists. Catherine Chen contributed with nine kills, six digs and three aces, while Meysha Riviere racked up 27 assists, nine aces and three digs. Mary Lockhart and Olivia Siemanowski were stong in the middle, as they combined for nine blocks.

Baker got strong contributions from sophomore Maddi Lewis who had three kills and stepped in for injured senior Natalie Horsmon in the middle. Annalee Cohn had three assists, two digs and a kill, and Dakota Jimmie had nine digs.

 

ANACORTES 3, BLAINE 0

Zaddack

The Borderites were unable to take a set from the highly skilled Seahawks on the road.

Blaine was led by the seven kills by Teya Zaddack, 30 digs by Brie Smith and six aces served up by Deja Dube.
