Lynden 3, Ellensburg 2

The Lions needed an extra inning in the first round of the state tournament, and junior catcher Tristan Thomas took the final pitch of the ball game to walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning capture the victory. Senior Lane Simonsen allowed four hits and struck out seven over the first seven innings, and sophomore Matthew Carroll picked up the win in relief. Senior Kael Stapleton scored two of his team’s three runs, while he and freshman Gordy Bedlington each had two hits.

All nine players in the Lynden lineup got a hit, including senior River Langstraat who recently returned from an injury to lead the Lions with three hits. Sophomore Spencer Adams knocked in three runs and stole a base. The Lyncs were down 1-0 after four innings of play, but a single by sophomore Sam Kok scored senior Jonah Terpstra to tie the game, and junior Austin Engels scored on the same play on an error. An inning later it was Terpstra who singled home sophomore Jaxon Huleatt to give Lynden Christian a 2-run lead. Meridian 3, Kiona-Benton 0

Few pitchers can accomplish what Nate Payne did on Saturday afternoon. Even fewer freshman could. The Trojan youngster threw a one-hit shutout as he helped advance his team into the quarterfinals of the 1A state tournament. Meridian scored all three its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Silas Berschauer’s singled home senior Jacob Amundson. A double steal followed which allowed junior Jonah Aase to score, and after Berschauer then took third base on another steal it was senior Tyson Timmer’s sacrifice bunt that brought Berschauer home. Not only did Payne allow just one hit, he also struck out nine batters without surrendering a walk.

W: Payne (6-4)

MER: Amundson 1-3, R; Forbes 1-2, Aase 1-2, R, BB; Berschauer 1-3, RBI, R,

Tenino 12, Lynden Christian 2

The strong LC run came to end in the quarterfinals as the Beavers scored 11 runs in the final three innings to overcome the Lyncs. Austin Engels and Brody Bouwman each had a pair of hits, with one of Engels’ being a double, but Lynden Christian was unable to put together a strong inning capable enough to put a crooked number on the scoreboard. The season for the Lyncs ended with a record of 14-11.

L: Bouwman (3-3)

LC: Engels 2-3, 2B, RBI, R, BB; Bouwman 2-4; Maberry 1-4, R, SB.

Meridian 1, Seton Catholic 0

The Cougars had scored double-digit runs 10 times during the season, including the last four games in a row, before facing Jonah Aase and the Trojans. The hard-throwing southpaw struck out 15 batters in the shutout victory to lead Meridian into the semifinal round of the 1A state tournament. Silas Berschauer hit a single with one out in the top of the fourth, and eventually came around to score on an error. It would be the lone run of the game. A second run nearly happened in the bottom of the same inning when Seton Catholic had a runner on second with two outs and their batter hit a line drive to right field. Junior right fielder Tristan Wang fielded it and threw a strike to senior catcher Ian Forbes to nail the runner at home, and save the game. The Trojans will face Cedar Park Christian at Joe Martin Stadium on Friday at 4:00.

W: Aase (2-0)

MER: Berschauer 1-3, R.
