Mount Baker 13, Orcas Island 9

The Mountaineers scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, after two outs were already recorded, and then held on for the victory at home, the first of the season. Leadoff hitter Magnus Melland collected three hits, walked twice, stole two bases, scored twice and also picked up the save in relief to lead Mount Baker. Senior centerfielder Braeden Scott was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while senior Tyson Rightmire and sophomore Toga Tigilau each smacked a double. Cameron Hesyck scattered five hits in four-plus innings to pick up the win on the mound.

The ball was flying all over the park on Thursday as big-time offense met up with subpar defense (12 total errors) to create a football score. Senior third baseman Silas Berschauer hit a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning which gave the Trojans a 16-8 lead at the time. He finished the game with a team-high five runs batted in, while freshman Nate Payne led with four hits including a double. Junior Jonah Aase scored five runs, and freshman Pierce Brzozowski picked up his first varsity win.

Senior second baseman Cooper Moore homered and junior catcher Tristan Thomas doubled, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions dropped just their second game of the season. After not scoring in the first two innings, the Vikings went on to score in every inning that followed. Senior centerfielder Kael Stapleton had two hits and two stolen bases for Lynden, while freshman left fielder Gordy Bedlington and junior designated hitter Daniel Reyes each drove in a run.
