The Lions and Cougars kept it close throughout the first quarter, matching each other basket for basket. Lynden managed to grab hold of a five-point lead entering the second quarter, but a 29-point performance from Lakewood would give them a 13-point advantage at halftime.

Coming out of the half, the Lions took the momentum in dominating fashion. They scored 14 unanswered points to take a one-point lead in under three minutes in the third quarter. The Lynden defense, which only allowed 14 points from the Cougars in the second half, held Lakewood to six points in the third quarter.

The first three minutes of the final quarter of play were scoreless and with roughly 25 seconds left in the game, the Cougars sent multiple Lynden players to the foul line. Lynden’s accuracy from the line shined as they piled points onto their total from the line and by the time the final buzzer went off, the Lions were out in front by nine points.

Junior forward Jack Stapleton led the Lions’ scoring effort with 23 points. Senior guards Charlie Ayres and Anthony Canales each had 10 points, and junior forward Brant Heppner had eight.

Senior point guard Brady Elsner also broke the school’s single-season record for assists, which was held for 46 years by Rick DeGraaff.
