The Pioneers enjoyed a 40-16 halftime lead before the Mountaineers had one of their biggest quarters of the season, when they ripped off 22 points, but Nooksack Valley’s lead was never threatened on the road.

Junior point guard Caden Heutink led the Pioneers with 16 points and five assists, while junior center Brady Ackerman powered through the paint to pick up 15 points and nine rebounds.

Mount Baker sophomore Payten Abitita scored 12 points to lead his team.

Junior Darius Gilstrap came off the bench to score 10 points for the Mountaineers, and freshman Kell Reardon added seven points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

  • Bellingham 72, Squalicum 67

Storm junior guard Marcus Nixon poured in 32 points, to go with his five rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, but it wasn’t enough as the Bayhawks played a complete game to defeat the crosstown rivals.

Bellingham junior forward Kincade VanHouten had 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists, all of which led his team.

He was joined by sophomore forward Joe Harward who nabbed 18 points and six boards, and senior guard Wyatt Stephan who totaled 12 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Freshman point guard Hunter Calloway also bolstered the Squalicum offensive attack as he finished with 14 points and four assists.

  • Sedro-Woolley 63, Meridian 62

The Trojans led by seven points after the first quarter, but the Cubs were able to even the game up at 34-34 by the half. It was tied once again after three quarters, and when Sedro-Woolley hit a layup with 2:25 left in the game it gave the Cubs a 62-55 lead, and it also led to a Meridian timeout.

The Trojans began to claw back when senior guard Jacob Amundson drilled a three-pointer from the right side with 1:45 left in the game.

That was followed up by a steal and layup by senior guard Taran Burks, and all of a sudden, the Trojans were down 62-60 with a minute left.

Junior guard Talon Jenkins then stole a pass under the basket, and Meridian set up offensively with 40 seconds left in regulation.

Jenkins was then able to drive to the hoop and score, which tied the game at 62-62 with 17 seconds left.

Logan Roth of the Cubs was fouled in the act of shooting with 1.8 seconds left. He made the first of two free throws, and that was enough to seal the victory on the road.

Jenkins led Meridian with 15 points and three steals. Junior guard Jaeger Fyfe added 13 points, five assists and four steals while Amundson finished with 11 points and five assists.
