Ferndale junior Jonah Brillowsky pulls down a defensive rebound in the first quarter against Sehome.
  • Ferndale 58, Sehome 55

The Mariners came into the game as one of the best free throw shooting teams in Whatcom County.

But, the law of averages did not work out in Sehome’s favor as the Mariners missed four straight foul shots in the final minutes while the score was tied at 53-53.

Golden Eagle senior guard Bhavnoor Grewal’s 2-foot attempt with less than a minute remaining gave his team a 2-point lead. A free throw made by sophomore Mantaj Singh extended Ferndale’s lead by three, but that was followed with a quick layup by Sehome sophomore Nolan Wright.

Ferndale senior guard Bishop Ootsey then connected on both of his free throw attempts to once again put his team up by three, and secure the win.

Grewal enjoyed a huge game offensively as he shot 12-for-20 and finished with a game-high 28 points. Singh finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals while junior forward Jonah Brillowsky added nine points and 10 boards.

Wright led the Mariners with 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

  • Nooksack Valley 56, Burlington-Edison 46

The Pioneers used a dynamic first quarter, in which they jumped out to a 10-point lead, to help them pick up their third victory in a row.

The Tigers came back in the second quarter, but were unable to take the lead as Nooksack Valley held a 26-21 advantage at the half.

Knifing drives by junior point guard Caden Heutink, along with feeding junior center Brady Ackerman down low, seemed to be what worked best for the Pioneers. Heutink finished with 15 points, and shot 9-of-10 from the foul line, while Ackerman also scored 15 points to go with his 14 rebounds (seven on the offensive glass) and two blocked shots.

Seniors Wayne Silves and Joey Brown provided scoring off the bench as they combined for 17 points.

  • Mount Vernon 78, Blaine 53

The Borderites just didn’t have enough firepower to keep up with the Bulldogs at home on Monday night.

Mount Vernon scored over 20 points in each of the first three quarters before resting the regulars in the fourth quarter.

Blaine was led by the 13 points of senior forward Noah Tavis who also grabbed seven steals. Sophomore guard Landon Melton added 11 points, nine of which from behind the three-point line.
