The highly anticipated match-up between the two 2A powers was evenly matched the whole way through.

The Seahawks had the upper hand at the end of the first quarter, 15-11 but got outscored by the Lions in the second to bring the game back within one entering the half. The Lynden defense, which had been the x-factor all night, held off Anacortes just enough for the Lions to have the one advantage entering the final quarter.

Almost eight minutes later, with mere seconds remaining and the Lions down by one, Lynden senior guard Anthony Canales found himself at the free-throw line with a chance to take the lead. He made the first two shots, tying the game 62-62. His next shot missed the hoop but bounced off the backboard into the hands of fellow Lynden senior post, Ty Holleman, who laid the ball in for the game-winning basket.

The clock showed no time left after Holleman’s shot, but a quick discussion between the refs put 2.4 back on it, allowing the Seahawks one more chance. The Lynden press forced them to take their shot from the other side of the court. It was no good as a packed house of Lion fans exploded in cheers.

On top of setting his teammate up for the winning basket, Canales led his team in scoring with 31 points, and junior forward, Brant Heppner was good for 17 points. Holleman contributed seven points, including his game-winning shot. Junior forward, Jack Stapleton had seven points.

  • Meridian 65, Bellingham 59

Following a triple overtime JV game, it looked like this one had the possibility of going into extra time as well.

A steal by Trojan senior Taran Burks resulted in a full-court outlet pass from Jaeger Fyfe to Cohen Fuller for a layup which gave Meridian 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Trojans held a 30-29 lead at the half, and as the Bayhawks played steady with Meridian throughout the second half, they ultimately fell at home.

Junior guard Talon Jenkins sank three 3-pointers in the third quarter, and finished with a team-high 25 points for the Trojans. He was aided by Burks who scored 12 points.

Bellingham was led by the 24 points, 13 rebounds and six steals of senior guard Wyatt Stephan. Junior forward Kincade VanHouten added 12 points, seven boards and four assists.

  • Mount Vernon 79, Ferndale 55

The Golden Eagles have been rapidly improving all season, but ran into a buzz saw down in Mount Vernon, and the Bulldogs upped their impressive record to 14-2 on the season.

I haven’t been able to obtain film of this game yet, but once I do, I will edit this story to include the stat lines of the leading players.
