Mount Baker 9, Lynden Christian 8
The win over the Pioneers meant the Mountaineers were to face the Lyncs again, where Lynden Christian started out with a bang by scoring three runs in the opening inning. Baker answered back with two in the first and one in the second, and the two teams played with a 3-3 tie through the scoreless third inning. Extra-base hits by Taryn Bos, Taya Vander Kooi and Kassidy VanSoest in the top of the fourth helped generate four runs for the Lyncs who then took a 7-3 lead, but Baker scored three runs from Annalee Cohn and Ella Maloley singles in the bottom of the inning to cut LC’s lead to 7-6. An error in the following inning allowed junior Jaydn Hoffman to score to tie the game, and Cohn stole second base, stole third base and eventually scored the go-ahead run on an error. Lauren Valum smacked a 2-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, and came around to score on a single from Zaida Haynes to give the Mountaineers a 2-run lead. The Lyncs loaded the bases in the seventh inning but were only able to score one run from it as the Baker defense made some big plays to end the game.

Now that the Mountaineers and Lyncs had split during the tournament, the championship (and the lone state berth) came down to one final game. The game was tied 2-2 after four innings, and Lynden Christian took the lead in the top of the fifth when freshman Roxanne Lenning tripled home Jadyn DeRuyter and Taylor Craig. That was followed up by a run-scoring single from Taryn Bos, and Taya Vander Kooi scored in the following inning on an error and the Lyncs were up 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. Mount Baker led off the inning with an out and three walks to load the bases. Gracie Zender then crushed a double to center field to clear the bases, and cut LC’s lead down to one run. Ava Jeretzky was promptly intentionally walked, and Lauren Valum tied the game two pitches later with a single that scored Zender. Two batters later, Kennedy Rathjen singled to right field which scored two runs and gave Mount Baker the lead, 8-6. The Mounties scored twice more at the end of the inning on a single from Annalee Cohn. Lynden Christian was able to get one run across in the seventh inning, but that would be it as Mount Baker won it’s third game of the day to secure the district championship and the lone berth to the state tournament.
