Koenen

Sophomore guard Malachi Koenen, wearing the number 15 and leading Lynden in scoring with 15 points in a game played on the 15th. And if that isn’t enough 15s already, the Lion offense scored exactly 15 points in each of the first three quarters of play.

With Lynden up by 18 headed into the fourth, the defense picked up for both teams. With the clock sitting at just under three minutes to go, both teams had scored a combined eight points.

Two minutes later, the Lions bench entered the game to finish the final seconds.

All of Koenen’s points came from beyond the arc as the sharp shooting sophomore made 5-of-10 from 3-point land. Senior forward Brant Heppner finished with 13 points, and senior forward Jack Stapleton led with 11 rebounds.

A late scoring effort from the Seahawks was not enough as the Lions booked a ticket to their second straight district championship game which will take place Wednesday at 7:45 against Lakewood at Mount Vernon High School.

  • Nooksack Valley 59, Mount Baker 56

The Pioneers avenged a regular-season loss to the Mountaineers by eliminating them from the postseason, and they did it in dramatic fashion.

Olney

Mount Baker was ahead for the majority of the contest, and was up 56-51 with 1:16 left in the game when Nooksack Valley senior Cory Olney drained a three-pointer from the corner which cut the lead to two points.

After the Mounties missed a pair of free throws the Pioneers had a chance to tie the game, or take the lead, with under a minute remaining.

With 45 seconds left, Nooksack Valley senior Tristan Kamphouse missed a 12-footer from the baseline, but it was quickly scooped up by Olney and the 6-foot guard put it back off the glass for two points.

Not only had he tied the game up, but he was fouled in the act.

His free throw gave the Pioneers a 57-56 lead, and Mount Baker was then fouled, but missed both foul shots with 25 seconds left.

Gilstrap

That caused the Mountaineers to foul, and Nooksack Valley senior guard Caden Heutink drained both of his foul shots with 14 seconds left.

Mount Baker had one last chance but its three-point attempt rimmed out, and the season ended for the Mountaineers who had their most winningest season since 2018.

Olney finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Heutink had 13 points, three assists and two steals.

Junior guard Owen Wichers also enjoyed his best game of the season with nine points as well as team-highs in rebounds (11) and assists (5).

Senior forward Darius Gilstrap finished with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists, and sophomore center Kell Reardon added 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

The Pioneers will try to keep their season alive on Tuesday at 7:45 when they face Meridian in a loser-out district tournament game at Lynden High School.

  • Archbishop Murphy 55, Bellingham 54

VanHouten

The Bayhawks had a chance, down 55-52, in the final seconds to tie the game, but a three-pointer came up just short and was put pack by junior forward Joe Harward just before the final buzzer went off.

There was hope that he may have been fouled on the play, which could have sent him to the line to tie the game up, but the refs concluded there was no foul, thus the game, and unfortunately the season, was over.

Senior forward Kincade VanHouten led Bellingham with 12 points, and senior guard Harmon Wienkers finished with 11 points.

Harward added 10 points for Bellingham, which dropped its final seven games of the season.
