Mount Vernon forfeit win over Bellingham

The bats came alive for the Borderites in their season opener as 23 hits led to 28 runs over five innings of play. Senior catcher Shaylie Daniels led the hit brigade with five, including two doubles. Junior pitcher Mesa Puls also had two doubles, and a homerun, and she finished with a team-high six runs batted in. Sophomore left fielder Kate Koreski added three hits for Blaine. Nevaeh Zaddack and Puls each scored four runs. Puls also picked up her first varsity win in the circle, as she struck out six batters in five innings.

Nooksack Valley 12, Sehome 6

The score was tied 2-2 after one inning, and then tied again 3-3 after the second inning, but the Pioneers got hot in the third inning, batted around, and scored six runs which was highlighted by a 3-run line drive homerun to right-center field from senior catcher Alayna Dykstra. Nooksack Valley also got a long ball from Kennedy Burke, while Kestyn Wagter and Alexis Larson each had a pair of hits. Junior pitcher Payton Bartl struck out six batters over the first three innings to earn the win, and freshman Alayna Vanieperen pitched the final four innings and struck out nine batters. Sehome was led offensively by J.J. Lewis, Rebekah Peterson and Sarah Kruzich who each had a pair of hits. Kruzich also struck out 10 batters in her six innings of work.

Lakewood 23, Mount Baker 21

The Mountaineers crushed seven home runs but weren’t able to pick up the win at home against the Cougars. Mount Baker jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings, but Lakewood put up 11 runs, with the last two runs being back-to-back home runs, in the top of the third to take the lead. Senior catcher Gracie Zender hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning to give Baker the lead back at 12-11, and senior Maddy Jungquist homered in the following inning. That was followed up by an RBI double from Jaydn Hoffman, and a three-run homerun from Annalee Cohn to give the Mountaineers a 17-11 lead. The Cougars then scored 12 runs over the final three innings to take the lead once again and ultimately capture the win. Sophomore Kara Welters led Mount Baker with four hits, including two homeruns, and the Mounties also got three hits from Zender, Hoffman and senior right fielder Alyssa DeRoco. Cohn and Zender each had four runs batted in, and senior third baseman Kennedy Rathjen had a home run and three runs batted in.

Friday Harbor 16, Squalicum 4

The Storm got on the board first when Addy Hauber singled home Gabi Gearhart, but the Wolverines scored eight runs in the bottom of the first to take the commanding lead. Squalicum scored three times in the top of the third, but it just wasn’t enough to pick up the win on the road. The Storm got base hits from Gearhart, Hauber, Laela Staniford and Carmen Rodriguez, and Gearhart scored twice.

Mount Vernon over Bellingham in forfeit

The Bulldogs poured it on at home against the Bayhawks who forfeited the game after Mount Vernon scored its 51st run with on a steal of home. Bellingham catcher Eden Johnson doubled and had two runs batted in the lead the offense. The Bayhawk runs were scored by Cassie Berwick, Sammy Stormo and Laura Porter.
