There were a lot of early fouls, and some overly tense moments for the Storm as the youthful group was trying to stave off elimination but found itself down 14-9 after one quarter of play.
Good thing for Squalicum… you get three more quarters.
The Storm quickly took advantage of that fact, and when sophomore guard Carli Kiesau stole the ball near midcourt and cruised in for an easy layup, it gave her team a 17-16 lead midway through the second quarter.
It was just the boost that was needed for Squalicum, and even though the Cougars were able to fight back and tie the game up at 20-20, another big boost happened seconds before the midway break when sophomore center Jazmin Singh-Sanchez blocked a shot in the paint.
The game was tied at the half, and the second half was when the Storm rained down.
Squalicum finished the game on a 38-7 run, and held Lakewood scoreless throughout the entire fourth quarter.
Sophomore point guard Lexi Robbins had the hot hand as she made 7-of-12 from the field for a team-high 18 points. She also collected five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Freshman guard Kailana Perez scored 11 points in limited minutes due to early foul trouble, and eventually fouling out, and Kiesau added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Sophomore forward Tiana Thompson also had a huge impact defensively by grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, 11 of them defensively, and the majority of those coming in the second-half surge. She also scored nine points.
The win kept the season alive for the Storm, and they will now face Burlington-Edison on Thursday at 6:00 at Mount Vernon High School.
