As the spring season of high school sports begin this week, so does my barrage of emails to every spring coach in Whatcom County. I did send out 78 separate emails today, introducing myself, and asking if I can come out to practice, and takes some pictures of their athletes. Maybe the spring season is a bad time to start out on this crazy adventure of mine? There are a lot of different sports going on in the spring, and I’m not sure if I can make it to 78 different practices in the next few weeks! However, I really want this to work. It might be a slow beginning, and all I can ask from everyone is patience. The dozens of emails I have received over the past week regarding this endeavor of mine have been immensely rewarding, and it has given me so much positivity about this community. The big question I get is, “Why are you doing this?” The answer is simple. It needs to be done.
I’m from this area, and I loved playing sports in high school. It was so great to read stories about kids that I knew, and grew up with, succeeding in the sport(s) of his or her choice. I was extremely fortunate to be able to cover local high school sports for the Bellingham Herald for six years, where I actually learned how to write! I was blessed with tremendous teachers at the Herald that were willing to be patient with a 20-year old kid that never took a journalism class, but had a passion for local high school sports.
I probably won’t be able to visit all 78 Whatcom County spring sports teams in the next few weeks, but I was able to make it to two of them today. I promise to do as much as I can during this season to give our local student/athletes the publicity they deserve for all of their hard work. I won’t be able to be down in Yakima for the state basketball tournament, but I hope to recap as much of it as I can.
I hope to bring you at least a brief recap of every high school sporting event 24 hours after it takes place this spring season. Maybe show statistical leaders in each sport. Put a spotlight on certain athletes, maybe even have a “Superstar Athlete of the Week”. The possibilities are endless, and everything is on the table. I would love to hear what YOU would want to see on this website, just please remember, baby steps at first, and I believe this can be something great for the entire community.
Thank you ALL!

This sounds like a great idea. Anything you write (almost) about high school athletes and their coaches would be appreciated.
