ARLINGTON – After each team scored a touchdown in the first quarter it was all Eagles, and it wasn’t Golden, as Arlington defeated Ferndale 46-14 at John C. Larson Stadium on Friday night.
The opening drive was a typical Golden Eagle smash mouth drive that ate up clock, and went 72 yards in 15 plays, and it ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Whatcom County’s leading ground gainer, Talan Bungard.
That would end up being the main highlight for Ferndale, as Arlington aired it out whenever it could, and the Eagles completed 19-of-24 passes for 370 yards and four touchdowns.
Golden Eagle senior Kleaveland Atwood, who was filling in for a dinged-up Bungard throughout the game at fullback, scored his first varsity touchdown in the third quarter on a 1-yard plunge.
Playing from behind, Ferndale was forced to pass for much of the contest, but senior quarterback Bishop Ootsey saw tight coverage on all his receivers and he tucked it and ran the majority of the time. He led his team on the ground with 66 yards on 13 carries.
Defensively, The Golden Eagles were led by senior Conner Walcker and junior Jacob Gandy who combined for 12.5 tackles in the middle of the field, and they also each broke up a pass.
Senior defensive end Kellan LaFave had a sack and a tackle for loss on back-to-back plays, and senior defensive end Brandon Gutierrez played well in the fourth quarter as he collected 5.5 tackles while contributing on another stop behind the line.
Ferndale (3-1) will be back home next week when it hosts Marysville-Pilchuck (4-0) on Friday at 7:00.
