Jacob Kaepernick was named the Northwest Conferene pitcher of the year.

Sehome 3, Burlington-Edison 1

Kaepernick
Malo

When I asked each Whatcom County baseball coach which team in the Northwest Conference was the team to beat, almost every team said it was Burlington-Edison, including Sehome coach Monte Walton. The Mariners went with their ace, Jacob Kaepernick, on the mound, and the sophomore delivered. He scattered five hits over seven innings of work while striking out five to pick up his second win of the season. The win didn’t come easy for Sehome as Tiger pitcher Isaiah Shelter struck out 12 batters in six innings. Kaepernick, senior catcher Lukas DeLisle and sophomore center fielder Tim Malo scored the three runs for the Mariners, and Malo picked up his team’s only run batted in. Sehome (4-4) will attempt to continue their winning streak at Anacortes (2-5) on Tuesday.

Senior righty James Marsh needed just 44 pitches in five innings to pitch an absolute gem, and every player in the Lion lineup got on base as Lynden opened up league play on the right foot. The Lion speedsters (Brendan Kleindel, Bodie Human and Connor White) combined for seven of the team’s 10 runs, while seniors Jack Doolittle and Carter Parcher powered together six runs batted in. Squalicum senior Josh Boysen and sophomore Mason Binning each connected on doubles.

The Borderites scored all five of their runs in the first inning, and then it was just a matter of holding on after that. Junior lefty Griffin King pitched into the fifth inning, and struck out seven to get his first victory of the season. Tobin Akre pitched the final two innings to pick up his second save of the season. Seniors Ben Wallen (two hits), Hayden Dohner (2 RBI’s) and Hudson Reid (2 walks) each had a big day offensively against a very good Anacortes team. Ferndale 13, Bellingham 1

Sandstrom
Bernard

Before the season started, I didn’t know that sophomore Kobe Sandstrom played catcher. To my surprise, he’s been playing catcher all season. He surprised me again on Friday when he took the mound and gave up just two hits and struck out eight in a six-inning complete game masterpiece while throwing 52 strikes to just 18 balls. What didn’t surprise me was the power that junior first baseman Geirean Hatchett provided by hitting his first home run of the season. Both players also picked up two hits, as did Bryan Ebe, Ryan Whipkey and Michael Bernard. Bernard also scored three runs and stole two bases. Bellingham center fielder Nathan Pursley hit a double, Lucas Bogaards picked up the other hit for the Red Raiders.

W: Sandstrom (1-0)

L: Davis (0-1)

BELL: Pursley 1-3, 2B, RBI; Bogaards 1-1.

Lynden Christian 9, Nooksack Valley 3

Johnson
Neitling

Sophomore Luke Johnson became the first pitcher to three victories as his 4 innings of work where he gave up three hits and struck out six did the job for the Lyncs. Junior Zach Sipma was a strike-throwing machine in the final three innings to pick up his second save of the season. Sipma also went 2-for-3 at the dish, while walking once, hitting a souble, knocking in a run and scoring a run. The Pioneers continued to struggle, but Evan Neitling had a big game with a single, a double, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored and a run batted in. LC’s Shale Whittern had a double and two runs batted in. The game also had 10 batters hit. The Pioneers (2-6) will try to get back to their winning ways when the host Meridian (2-2) on Tuesday.

Sedro Woolley 17, Mount Baker 0

T. Kentner

After scoring 33 runs in the last two games, it just wasn’t to be against the Cubs on Friday. In fact, the Mountaineers were only able to get one base hit in the game, which came from freshman Tyler Kentner. Sophomore Toby Jefferson was also able to reach base when he was hit by a pitch, and senior Issac Gomes reached on a fielder’s choice. Mount Baker (3-5) will travel to Burlington-Edison to take on the Tigers on Tuesday.
