BELLINGHAM – The steady improvement of the Bayhawks resulted in their first win on Friday night, a 28-6 victory over South Whidbey at Civic Stadium.
Constant, strong winds forced Coach Robb Myhre to go to a ground attack, and his athletes responded, rushing for 227 yards on 37 carries, including three touchdowns on the ground. In fact, it was the first time in three years that three different Bellingham players scored a rushing touchdown in the same game.
The main star on the ground was senior wide receiver Johnny Twedt, who took seven fly sweeps, and totaled a team-high 99 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown. Senior Alex Breeding amassed 73 yards on the ground over 10 carries, and junior Logan Steeves took the majority of the 4th quarter carries to help run out the clock, one of which saw him score his first varsity tochdown.
Twedt also caught a quick-out from junior quarterback Max Rasset and took it 50 yards for the game’s first score. Twedt also led his team in receiving, while Rasset completed 5-of-9 passes for 71 yards.
The Bayhawk defense also played very well throughout the game with numerous big players at key moments. Senior defensive lineman Jordan McCormack registered five tackles, including two tackles for loss, a quarterback sack and a forced fumble. Senior linebacker Daniel Reyes again led his team in tackles, this time with 11. He also had 2.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Senior James Quinlan, who usually plays strong safety, was moved over to cornerback and he picked off his first pass of the season.
Bellingham (1-2) will look to keep it rolling next week when it plays it’s only Whatcom County opponent, the Trojans (1-1) at Meridian on Friday night at 7:00.
