BELLINGHAM – In the first quarter, Everett attempted a pass on 3rd-and-14. It was incomplete, and the Seagulls didn’t attempt another pass throughout the rest of the game. They didn’t have to. Everett’s run game dominated the rest of the way, as the Seagulls defeated the Bayhawks 59-7 at Civic Stadium on Friday night.
Early interceptions and a blocked punt gave Everett short fields, in which the Seagulls capitalized over and over again, rushing for over 400 yards in the contest.
Bellingham was held to negative total yards from scrimmage at halftime, but did get excitement from kick returner Alex Breeding. The senior led Whatcom County with 150 kickoff return yards last season, and the 5-foot-3 145-pound speedster racked up 178 yards on just five returns, including a 93-yard touchdown.
The Bayhawk offense started to click late in the game, picking up a few first downs, but more will need to be worked on before next week.
Defensively, junior safety Liam Poulton-Claypool led with 7.5 tackles, while defensive linemen Matthew Butenschoen and Javen Livas each had stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Bellingham (0-1) will host West Seattle (1-0) this Friday at 8:00 at Civic Stadium.
