BELLINGHAM – It was smash mouth football. It was Ted Flint football. It was, “here it is, try and stop it” football. It was a 47-0 shutout win by the Red Raiders over Sammamish on Friday night at Civic Stadium.
Bellingham attempted just one pass, and gained over 400 yards on the ground. It stayed in a Straight-T formation for the majority of the game, using fullback dives with Jack Fields, halfback sweeps with Towner Goodman and Tim Edwards and quarterback keepers with Morgan Cavalier.
The defense allowed just 47 yards rushing on 18 carries, and 77 yards passing in 18 pass attempts, and shut out its first opponent since South Whidbey, in 2011.
Fields led the way on both sides of the ball. He finished with a team-high 107 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 20 carries. He also led his team in tackling from his inside linebacker spot. Goodman also ran for 107 yards, highlighted by a 72-yard scamper up the right sideline near the end of the game.
Cavalier had four carries of over 18 yards, and finished with 97 yards and two touchdowns, and Edwards ran for 95 yards and a score on 13 carries.
Connor McKay and Jackson Taylor each intercepted a pass, and senior Spencer Lee was finally healthy enough to play as he returned two punts for 33 yards and played safety on defense.
The Red Raiders (1-2) will being conference play on Friday when they travel to Cedarcrest (2-1).
