ARLINGTON – For the first time in five years, the Bayhawks once again played in a Northwest Conference football game, but it didn’t go as planned as the host Cougars took to the air to defeat Bellingham 46-14 on Friday night.

Lakewood scored on its third play from scrimmage on a 50-yard touchdown pass, and the Bayhawks answered back a few possessions later.

Frost

Bellingham showed a strong running game with 248-pound senior Tyler Frost carrying the ball, and when junior quarterback Joe Harward completed passes to senior tight end Gabe VanHofwegen and junior wide receiver Owen Hanstead, both for first downs, it set up Frost for a mighty five-yard touchdown run.

Frost finished the game with a team-high 78 rushing yards on 15 carries.

Cooper Whippple’s extra point tied the game at 7-7 in the beginning of the second quarter.

This was when the Cougars began to make their run.

After Lakewood scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass, the Cougar defense quickly got the ball back on an interception. A few plays later, Lakewood scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass, and it was 20-7 at the half.

The Bayhawks received the second half kickoff, but fumbled a few plays later. The Cougars took advantage and scored on a 15-yard touchdown run on the very next play.

Stone

Lakewood intercepted two more passes in the third quarter and went on to score two more touchdowns in the third quarter, and one in the fourth to put the game far out of reach.

Bellingham scored in the fourth quarter when Harward found junior wide receiver Aiden Pullar for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

Harward passed for 148 yards and ran for 76 yards on the evening.

Junior linebacker Jordan Stone led the Bellingham defense with 6.5 tackles, including three quarterback sacks. VanHofwegen added two stops behind the line of scrimmage.

It won’t get any easier for the Bayhawks (0-2) who will travel to Anacortes (0-2) on Friday to take on the defending state champions at 7:00.
