BELLINGHAM – For the second week in a row, it was the Trevor Johnson show. The senior quarterback scored four touchdowns on the ground, threw for two more, kicked all the extra points and a 33-yard field goal as the Red Raiders beat the Tigers 45-13 at Civic Stadium on Thursday night.
As he has become more comfortable with the offense, his numbers have gone through the roof. He completed 13-of-21 passes for 255 yards, while also picking up 117 yards on the ground on 11 carries. Almost half of them came on his first carry of the game, a 62 yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Johnson ran in his second touchdown of the game on the following drive, and then hit fellow senior Manny DePalma on a quick pass which DePalma then took 51 yards for a score. DePalma led his team in receiving with five catches for 88 yards.
Johnson also connected with senior Marcus McColl on a 57-yard touchdown pass. After faking a quick out to the left, Johnson saw McColl streaking down the left sideline alone, and hit him in stride. Johnson then ran in a score from eight yards away, and Bellingham enjoyed a comfortable 38-0 halftime lead.
The Tigers scored twice in the third quarter, but it was much too little and far too late.
Junior linebacker Finn O’Malley led the Red Raiders defensively with 11.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss. He was aided by junior defensive tackle Matthew Butenschoen who had eight tackles, and 1.5 tackles for loss. DePalma also had an interception, his second of the season, late in the game.
Bellingham (2-2) does not have a scheduled game for Tuesday, but it will host Nooksack Valley (1-3) on Saturday the 20th. It should be an emotional one, as Coach Robb Myhre will coach against his alma-mater for the first time after leading the Pioneers for 20 years.
