Waylon Uhrig's first half goal

BELLINGHAM – In a battle between arguably the two best soccer teams in the county, the Red Raiders got the best of the Storm, winning 4-0 at Civic Stadium on a cold, rainy Monday night.

“We were able to create chances from the start,” Bellingham coach Matt Zigulis said. “We opened up out account in the first 10 minutes with persistent effort from Waylon Uhrig.”

Uhrig scored on a cross from Spencer Sumpter. After that goal, the rest of the first half played out with both teams competing and creating opportunities.

“Our defense did a great job of holding Squalicum scoreless after having a number of chances leading up to halftime,” Zigulis added.

The Red Raiders scored three more goals in the second half. Two coming from Casey Carter, and another from Sumpter (who also finished with two assists). An unfortunate injury removed goalkeeper Magnus Elm from the game in the second half, but forward Elan Maxim filled in to preserve the shutout.

“Squalicum has a tremendous midfield and I thought that Oliver Knickrehm and Conner Steward were both huge factors in keeping them relatively quiet with their defensive discipline,” said Zigulis. “It was a great team effort, and I was extremely proud of everyone.”

Bellingham (4-0-1) will host Lakewood (1-5) on Wednesday at 7:30, while Squalicum (5-1) will travel to Meridian (3-1-1) to play at 4:30 on Wednesday.
