BLAINE – The Mariners got off to a great start when sophomore Andre Watson returned the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and it was all Sehome from there as the Mariners upended the Borderites 49-6 on Friday night.
Moments after Watson’s exciting opening heroics, he took a bubble screen, danced through members of the Blaine defense, and went 57 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter.
The offense was continuously clicking for Sehome, and quarterback Nolan Wright threw for three more touchdown passes in the second quarter. The first on a scramble in which he found senior tight end Max Malo from two yards out, and the next two on deep passes to 6-foot-6 senior Braddock Duckworth.
Wright became the first freshman in Whatcom County history to throw four touchdown passes in a game, and also became the first freshman in Whatcom County history to pass for over 200 yards in a game. To make it even more impressive, he did it by completing all eight of his pass attempts, and he also ran for 42 yards on just four attempts. There might be a few more firsts in his future.
Sehome became strictly ground-based in the second half, and Tommy Funk scored on a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He finished with a game-high 97 yards on 10 carries. Sophomore running back Solomon McAlister scored the final Mariner touchdown of the evening on an 8-yard burst toward the left-front corner of the end zone.
Blaine got on the board at the end of the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Colin Davis threw a perfect pass down the right sideline for a 26-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Riley Ihde.
Sehome (2-0) will begin conference play on Friday at Sedro-Woolley at 7:00, and the Borderites (0-2) will travel to Vashon Island on Friday to take on the Pirates at 6:00.
