VASHON – Blaine outgained Vashon Island, but it was key plays at key moments that helped the Pirates defeat the Borderites 17-6 on Friday night.
A pair of interceptions and fumbles didn’t help Blaine’s cause, but the Borderites were able to turn over the Pirates in big moments as well.
After a scoreless first quarter, Blaine scored the first touchdown of the game on a back-corner fade from senior quarterback Kael Evinger to junior wide receiver Hunter Vezzetti from nine yards out.
The Pirates retaliated quickly with an 83-yard touchdown pass, and the made extra point gave Vashon Island a 7-6 lead.
A key interception by the Pirates on the following drive helped set up a 34-yard field goal by Vashon Island just moments before half time.
It was a very evenly played second half, but the Borderites just weren’t able to get back onto the scoreboard, while the Pirates were able to score one more touchdown in the third quarter.
Sophomore running back Colby Shipp enjoyed a career-night with 165 yards rushing on a whopping 35 carries. Evinger finished with 141 yards passing on 14 completions.
Numerous Blaine players had big games defensively, and it was led by junior nose tackle Victor Gervol who led with nine tackles to go along with two sacks and a forced fumble. Junior outside linebacker Conner Dalry recovered two fumbles, and senior defensive lineman Jacob Voigt also had two sacks, and a forced fumble.
The Borderites (0-3) will be back home on Friday when they host King’s (2-1) at 7:00.
