BLAINE – The Borderites enjoyed some home cooking once again, as this time it was Cedar Park Christian who came to town, and Blaine avenged last year’s loss to the Eagles by defeating them 47-12 on Friday night.
Before the Borderites had an offensive series, they got on the scoreboard when junior Kai Kerwin scooped up a punt on a bounce, broke two tackles, and then broke loose for a 55-yard touchdown return. It was the first punt return for a touchdown for Blaine since 2001 when Zeth Simpson did it against Mount Baker.
The play energized the crowd, and the rejuvenated Borderites would feed off them for the rest of the night.
Much like week one, it was more of the same “ground and pound” style that Blaine would ride to victory.
Senior running back Jaiden Paez finished with 174 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just nine carries, with two touchdowns runs in the first half, and two more in the second half.
Senior running back Colby Shipp and senior quarterback Colin Davis also scored rushing touchdowns in the first half.
It wasn’t just the offense and special teams that came up big… the defense showed up in a huge way.
Blaine’s “Border Patrol” defense held its opponent to negative rushing yards for the second week in a row, and was led by senior defensive end Blake Koreski. The former inside linebacker had six tackles, two tackles for loss, a quarterback sack, a forced fumble, two passes deflected and a fumble recovery.
The Eagles scored one touchdown late in the first half, and another one in the fourth quarter.
The Borderites (2-0) will go on the road for the first time this season on Friday as they will take on Chelan (1-1) at 7:00.
