BLAINE – For the second time this season, the Borderites gained over 200 yards rushing and 200 yards receiving in the same game, and that balance helped Blaine defeat Shorewood 36-13 on Friday night.

Not only did the victory help elevate the Borderites’ record to 3-1 on the season, but it also gave Jay Dodd his 71st victory as head coach, which puts him ahead of Phil Claymore as the winningest coach in school history.

Claymore held the school record for 46 years.

Before coaching, Dodd was a three-year starter on both sides of the line for Blaine in the mid 1990’s. He then became the head coach in the fall of 2006.

When asked what it meant to have more coaching wins than anyone else in Borderite history, he was quick to spread the love.

“It’s not just me,” Dodd said. “It’s a lot of players, coaches, administration, and of course my wife. I don’t consider myself to be Bill Belichick or anything, but I do know that my wife has allowed me to do this job for a long time.”

We are all thankful for that, Joelle!

Blaine fans were also thankful that the running game came back to life, as junior Larry Creasey had a team-high 122 yards on 17 carries, including two touchdowns. He split time in the backfield with senior Gabe Cranford who finished with 77 yards on 15 carries.

The passing game remained dynamic as senior quarterback Avery Dohner threw for over 200 yards for the third time in four games. He also completed touchdown passes to seniors Jaxon Kortlever and Scott Baldwin. Baldwin finished with a game-high seven receptions for 102 yards.

Defensively, the Borderites were again led by inside linebacker Spencer Dalry. The senior came into the game as the only player in Whatcom County averaging over 10 tackles per game, and he kept his average in double-digits by registering 13.5 tackles, including a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Senior defensive end Anden Holley had a huge game with three quarterback sacks, two tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery, and Kortlever had 7.5 tackles and broke up four passes.

Blaine (3-1) has yet to play a conference game, but is scheduled to travel to Mount Baker (3-2) on Friday.
