EVERETT – The losing streak of three games that the Wildcats had against Whatcom County teams was quickly halted on Friday night, and the losing streak of three games this season grew by one for Blaine as Archbishop Murphy shut out the Borderites 43-0.
Blaine stayed with the powerhouse squad in the first quarter, but quickly found itself in a 33-0 deficit at the half. The Wildcats running game worked well, rushing for 235 yards. They were only able to complete four of their 16 pass attempts, but they amassed 112 yards.
Borderite sophomore Cole Thomas got his first varsity start at quarterback, and was able to connect with fellow sophomore Jaxon Kortlever three times. The 5-foot-11 Kortlever displayed great timing, and was able to make some fine catches at the ball’s highest point. Thomas finished with 64 yards on 7-of-17 passing.
Other bright spots for Blaine included linebacker Gavino Rodriguez who had 2.5 tackles for loss and defensive lineman Wyatt Cole who had a pair of quarterback sacks.
The Borderites (1-4) will host Sedro Woolley (4-1) on Friday.
