CHELAN – The Blaine defense got it done once again, this time on the road as the Borderites defeated Chelan 27-0 on Friday night.
The win put Blaine at 3-0 for the first time since 1990.
The Goats marched down the field with relative ease to begin the contest, and had possession for half of the first quarter, but the Blaine defense was able to stop them on fourth down to take control of the ball on its own 15-yard line.
The Borderites then duplicated what Chelan had done, and controlled the ball for the rest of the third quarter before senior quarterback Colin Davis plunged in from a yard out in the beginning of the second quarter.
The Goats ran few plays in the second quarter, thanks to interceptions by sophomore cornerback Peyton Bouma and senior linebacker Colby Shipp. Both turnovers turned into short touchdown runs by senior running back Jaiden Paez, and Blaine led 20-0 at the half.
The Borderites added a touchdown in the third quarter on a fly sweep in which Davis shoveled a quick pass to wide receiver Kai Kerwin who was coming in motion. The speedy junior swept around the end and scored from 11 yards out to make it 27-0.
Kerwin also intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter, his second pick of the season.
Other standouts on defense include Shipp who led with 10.5 tackles, as well as senior defensive end Blake Koreski who finished with seven tackles.
Paez rushed for 153 yards on 23 carries, his third straight 100-plus yard performance to start the season. Davis was also on target as he completed 7-of-8 passes for 132 yards.
The Borderites (3-0) will be at Granite Falls (2-0) on Friday to take on the Tigers at 7:00.
