BLAINE – Last week the Borderites couldn’t get anything to go their way. Last night was a completely different story. After a close first half, Blaine turned it up in the third quarter, intercepting four passes and scoring 28 points and ultimately beat Cedarcrest 49-8 at the last game that will be watched from the current grandstands at Blaine High School.
Blaine will begin construction of a new stadium soon, with new grandstands for the 2019 season, and new field turf for the 2020 season.
Senior running back Alex Mercado had quite a game, scoring both Borderite touchdowns in the first half. He also scored the first two of the second half. He finished the game leading Blaine with 139 yards on 22 carries.
Senior safety Derek Machula played in his first game since an injured back put him out against Sehome. He picked off a pass and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown to put Blaine up 35-0 in the third quarter. Zane Rector had an interception behind the line of scrimmage earlier in the quarter, and sophomore safety Seth Blomeen picked off a pass to end the first half, and to begin the second half.
The Red Wolves stayed with the aerial attack, and near the end of the third quarter it was junior linebacker Mason Vega who intercepted a pass and returned it 83 yards for a touchdown, but the play was called back on a penalty during the return. It did however begin the drive that ended when sophomore quarterback William McKinney found senior wide receiver Chase Abshere on a beautiful fade route in the corner of the end zone from five yards away.
Blomeen scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring for the orange and black.
Blaine (3-4) will travel to Anacortes (0-6, and playing Sehome tonight) to take on the Seahawks this Friday night.
