MARYSVILLE – Generally, the wing back in the Wing-T formation handles the ball around 5-10 times per game. That player is usually very dynamic, and is capable of big plays. Ferndale senior Jacob Broselle fits that mold perfectly and his amazing performance set the tone for a 41-14 victory for his Golden Eagles over Marysville-Getchell at Quil Ceda Stadium on Friday night.

The ball found Broselle a total of 16 times, and he scored four touchdowns. He rushed for 128 yards on 13 carries, and also caught three passes for 150 yards.

Ferndale was full of big plays, and the Chargers had to play catch-up the entire game. Broselle’s first touchdown came on the opening drive on a 43 yard sweep to the right as he followed Geirean Hatchett’s de-cleating block and glided to the end zone. Sophomore fullback Ryan Pelton followed that up with an 80-yard run up the middle that started with multiple broken tackles, and ended with him running free all by himself.

On the Golden Eagle’s first pass attempt of the game senior quarterback Haiden Rasmussen threw the ball deep down the seam, Broselle ran under it, and took it 73 yards for a touchdown. Broselle would also score a 2-yard touchdown just before half time.

The Marysville-Getchell defense clamped up in the third quarter and forced Ferndale to punt on its two possessions of the quarter, but Broselle would score his final touchdown in the fourth on a 14-yard run which punished a defensive back on his way to the end zone. Sophomore Thomas Broselle, showed the strong lineage, scored on a 20-yarder that saw him break multiple tackles before finally diving across the goal line.

It’s been a long line of Broselle brothers these past few years at Ferndale, beginning with Ben who graduated from Ferndale in 2017 and his 11.22 yards per carry is the highest career average in Whatcom County history for players with at least 150 attempts.

Junior safety Andrew Monks had a big game defensively as he was in on nine tackles. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 78 yards.

The Golden Eagles (1-2) will host Arlington (3-0) on Friday night.

  1. Hi Tyler, great coverage of all the Whatcom county football games. I look forward to reading your website each Saturday to look at scores and read game stories. Just wanted to point out a misprint or possibly a report that wasn’t accurate. Jacob Broselle did have a great game. But the last rushing touchdown was actually that of his sophomore brother Thomas who ran around the right side for about 20 yards to score the touchdown in the fourth quarter. Thanks
