BELLINGHAM – The Red Raiders improved a lot from week one to week two, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Lakewood 40-14 at Civic Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Two long first quarter touchdowns by the Cougars brought Bellingham’s spirits down, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Raiders fought back in the second quarter. Junior quarterback Morgan Cavalier scored on a quarterback keeper over right guard to score his team’s first touchdown of the season.
After giving up a short Cougar touchdown, Bellingham charged down the field again and senior running back Towner Goodman scored a 3-yard plunge to pull within eight points at halftime, 22-14.
Unfortunately, it was all Lakewood in the second half.
Jack Fields led Bellingham in rushing with 72 yards on 14 carries, and he was again in most of the tackles from his linebacker position. 6-foot-3 215-pound linebacker Elijah Kongshaug also had a big play on an interception in the third quarter.
Bellingham totaled nearly 300 yards of total offense, and should be continually improving throughout the season.
The Red Raiders (0-2) will host Sammamish (0-2) on Friday night at Civic Stadium.
