LYNDEN – With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Lynden junior Jack Doolittle’s sacrifice bunt scored Trevin Hope to win the game 2-1 over Meridian on Friday in both teams’ league openers.
Lion junior pitcher James Marsh was a model of efficiency as he went nine innings on the mound, allowing just one run (which was unearned) in only 86 pitches. His ERA is now down to a miniscule 0.50.
He battled Trojans ace Simon Burkett, who pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just one hit and one run, but walked five while striking out six.
Jordan Holmstrom went 2-for-4 for Lynden, and Trevor Abitia walked, stole a base and scored a run.
Cole Weidkamp and Baker Otter each had a pair of hits for Meridian, Otter’s batting average is still near the top of the county at .550.
Lynden (4-2) will hope the rain goes away for Tuesday’s matchup at Joe Martin Field against Squalicum (3-3) at 4:30, while Meridian (3-2) will take on the Storm at home on Wednesday at 4:00. The Trojans beat Squalicum 11-8 in each teams’ first game of the season.
