BELLINGHAM – Ferndale girls soccer coach Rigel Weis wanted to start strong, and his team did just that, scoring three goals in the first 10 minutes of the match as the Golden Eagles topped Mount Baker 11-0 at the Phillips 66 Sports Complex on Saturday.
“We wanted to make sure we were crisp on the ball,” Weis said. “Good passing, good touches and not wasting any time on the ball. We wanted to make sure that was happening right off the bat.”
Junior midfielder Ashley Thomas scored on a pass from junior forward Aleah Washington in the first minute of the game, and junior Jocelyn Seig scored a goal seven minutes later that was also assisted by Washington.
“We were able to play with great possession today,” said Seig. “In the second half we were able to focus on passing the ball. It will be important for us as a team to control the ball going forward in the season, and play with more pressure.”
Seig scored her second goal of the game on a header from junior Natalie Monks, and also assisted on another goal.
“We’re a young team, with a really good junior class,” Weis said while evaluating his team. “Our goal is to push for a playoff spot. A lot of our girls have been playing together a long time with club teams.”
Washington also added two goals to her two earlier assists, and Thomas scored again in the second half. Sophomores Blakely Browne and Anna Taylor each added a goal, and fellow sophomore Abigail Arnold scored a pair of goals in the second half.
Seniors Shelby-Rae Jacobs and Janessa Mattingly each assisted on a pair of goals. Monks led the way with three assists.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) will travel to Bellingham (2-0) on Monday to take on the Red Raiders at 7:00 PM.
