MOUNT VERNON – After playing such a tightly contested game a week ago, the Golden Eagles came out and blew right past Mount Vernon 42-7 on Friday night.
The Ferndale defense kept the Bulldogs down for most of the game, and didn’t allow a play of more than six yards until the backups came in during the fourth quarter. Junior defensive end Jake Mason led the attack up front with six tackles, two sacks, another tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
Defensive linemen Landen Hatchett, Xander Castleberry and Camden Raymond each also registered big plays behind the line of scrimmage and senior inside linebacker Elijah McCormick had a team-high seven tackles.
The Golden Eagle offense had multiple short fields to work with, and converted them into touchdowns. Isaiah Carlson and Ryan Pelton each scored a pair of touchdowns, while Mark Schlichting threw a touchdown pass to sophomore Dylan Moore and ran for another score.
Carlson led his team with 70 yards on the ground on 11 carries, and Pelton added 60 yards on just five attempts. Schlichting completed 7-of-14 passes for 98 yards.
Ferndale (4-0) will play its toughest game of the year thus far on Friday on the road against Marysville-Pilchuck (4-0). The Tomahawks are coached by Mount Baker alum Brandon Carson.
