FERNDALE – The Golden Eagles were down 21-0 at halftime, not a familiar spot for them to be in. A stronger second half allowed the score to end in a 42-14 loss against Lake Stevens, one of the best 4A teams in the state.
Although Bryan Ebe started the game at quarterback, Ferndale eventually settled with Sequoyah Julius. It seemed to work out quite well, with Julius completing 6-of-7 passes for 83 yards and Ebe (who then moved to running back) led the team with 105 yards on 17 carries, including a 13-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter. Tight end Tyler Hoffmaster led the Golden Eagles in receiving with two receptions for 58 yards. 220-pound senior fullback Gader Fox scored Ferndale’s other touchdown from a yard out near the end of the game.
Lake Stevens was able to methodically move the ball on Ferndale with quick counters and other misdirection run plays. It was able to stack up 207 rushing yards to go with 100 passing yards.
Ferndale (0-1) will travel to Lynden (1-0) on Friday to play in one of Whatcom County’s favorite matchups. Ferndale won last year 19-16 in a thrilling come from behind win. It was the first time since 1989 that Ferndale won a game without scoring a rushing touchdown!
