OAK HARBOR – The Wildcats ran 77 plays on offense. The Golden Eagles ran 35 plays. It was that kind of night for Ferndale as Oak Harbor controlled the clock, most of the game, and defeated Ferndale 28-13 at Wildcat Memorial Stadium on Friday night to remain undefeated.
A long Oak Harbor drive in the first quarter was stopped in the red zone when Ferndale senior defensive back Taylor Lupo intercepted a pass, but the Wildcats would put together two more long drives, this time scoring short runs on both of them. Golden Eagle senior quarterback Sequoyah Julius completed two long passes, a 33-yarder to Watiko Leighton and a 17-yarder to Lupo, just before halftime, but couldn’t get on the scoreboard.
Senior fullback Gader Fox scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter, which was set up by a tremendous 32-yard run by senior half back Bryan Ebe. Oak Harbor answered quickly with a short pass that the Wildcat receiver took 63-yards for a touchdown.
Fox scored again in the third quarter, which brought the score to a 21-13 lead by Oak Harbor, but the Wildcats put together one of those most impressive drives of the season.
Using almost all of the fourth quarter, the Wildcats drove 73 yards on 20 plays and capped it off with a one-yard touchdown. Oak Harbor was masterful at gaining either three or four yards on each play, just getting first down after first down. The Wildcats ran the ball 69 times in the game, but only three of their attempts went for more than 10 yards.
Ebe led Ferndale with 76 yards rushing, and Leighton had 75 yards receiving.
The Golden Eagles (1-4) will host Squalicum (4-1) this Friday night.
